Brenton Thwaites didn't have to wait long to understand how the Hollywood machine works.
In 2011, he got his training on the set of Home and Away, which is the required school for any Australian actor who wants to cross the pond. There he learned to work fast and stop complaining about the Queensland sun before buying a one-way ticket to Los Angeles. The actor, born in Cairns in 1989, knew his classic leading-man look had an expiration date unless he found a major project soon.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2014, he shot Maleficent alongside Angelina Jolie. His role as the prince charming was little more than a narrative ornament, but it helped him get on the list of names studios draw from for their big fantasy productions. That year he appeared in four different films, including the lead role in The Giver opposite Jeff Bridges.
The industry tried to make him the new face of action franchises, throwing money at the idea. In 2016, he starred in Gods of Egypt, and the film crashed at the box office, barely covering its marketing costs. It was a hard blow because the budget exceeded 140 million dollars, and critics showed no mercy toward the final result.
But Thwaites held his ground, and in 2017 he climbed aboard Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
He played the son of Orlando Bloom in a production that grossed 794 million dollars worldwide. The actor realized his screen presence was better suited to roles with emotional depth than to straight action heroes. So he decided to turn to television to explore darker material, away from the big spotlights of summer blockbusters.
Not all success is measured at the box office.
In 2018, he agreed to lead the cast of Titans as Dick Grayson. The series moved away from the bright tone of other superhero shows and allowed him to show a much more violent and tormented side. Over four seasons, the actor carried the weight of a story that explored the trauma of being Batman's ward in a world that no longer needed Robin.
Filming of the series wrapped in 2023 after 45 episodes aired. Thwaites used the end of this stage to return to projects with a more intimate approach and less reliance on computer-generated visual effects. He looked for stories where dialogue carried more weight than fight choreography.
In 2024, he appeared in the thriller A Sacrifice, directed by Jordan Scott. Filming took place mainly in Berlin, and it allowed him to share the screen with Sadie Sink in a story about cults and extremist sects. The film premiered in June 2024 in the United States with a limited theatrical release before moving to digital platforms.
He closed that chapter by shooting the musical adaptation How to Make Gravy in Australia. The production operated on a tight budget and focused on recreating a purely local atmosphere for the Binge platform. The film was scheduled to premiere in December 2024, with a crew made up almost entirely of professionals from Sydney.
