Abbey Lee arrived on the set of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015 with a body covered in fake scars and a faraway look in her eyes. George Miller wasn't looking for a pretty face to decorate the Australian wasteland, but a haunting presence that would break the mold of high-fashion runways. Her performance as The Dag worked as a radical statement of intent.
Behind her were the years of walking the runway for Chanel or Gucci in Paris. But that earlier phase was not a burden. The actress used her complete control over her own body to build characters that seem to float between the real and the dreamlike. Ultimately, her move into film was a deliberate escape from the fashion industry.
She wasn't just another model trying her luck.
In 2016, Nicolas Winding Refn called her to join The Neon Demon. The Danish director wanted to capture the toxicity of beauty, and Lee took on the challenge of playing Sarah (a veteran model consumed by envy). Her realistic performance unsettled critics with the coldness she brought to the film's most gruesome scenes.
During the shoot in Los Angeles, the actress chose to step away from the media spotlight to focus on independent projects. She turned down supporting roles in big superhero productions in favor of scripts with greater psychological depth. That strategy helped her avoid the typecasting that often follows figures who come from the fashion magazines.
Television gave her the space to develop a more complex dramatic arc. In 2020 she joined the cast of the series Lovecraft Country to bring Christina Braithwhite to life. The role demanded a mix of aristocratic elegance and contained inner violence, which Lee handled without needing big physical displays.
And the gamble paid off.
M. Night Shyamalan worked with her in 2021 on Old (where she played Chrystal). In this production, the technical challenge was enormous, since her character suffered accelerated bone degeneration caused by the effects of the magical beach. Lee's physical transformation on screen became one of the most talked-about aspects of the film because of its raw visual intensity.
Before accepting a role, the actress usually studies the visual composition of the project. In 2018, she starred in Elizabeth Harvest (a modern take on the Bluebeard myth), where the weight of the story rested almost entirely on her shoulders. But the film didn't achieve the commercial impact everyone expected, despite its carefully crafted aesthetic.
After a few years focused on more intimate productions, the actress returned to epic formats. In 2024, she took part in Horizon: An American Saga under the direction of Kevin Costner. The project marked her entry into the classic Western genre, a territory where physical endurance and a dry tone are essential to surviving the frame.
Her role in Costner's saga moves away from the ethereal fragility of her early work. On the set in Utah, the actress had to adapt to extreme weather conditions and to a production pace that required shooting several installments simultaneously. The contract for this franchise ties her image to the director's vision over several years of uninterrupted production.
In 2024, filming of the additional scenes for the second installment of Horizon was completed in the desert with a crew of more than two hundred people.
