Caleb Landry Jones first appeared on a Texas back road, riding a bicycle. He was seventeen and had just two lines in No Country for Old Men. That brief scene of 2007, next to a bloodied Javier Bardem, was enough for casting directors to notice his unusual features.
His look is a map of freckles and impossible angles that doesn't fit the traditional leading-man mold. But that very oddity helped him avoid generic teen roles early on. In 2010, he appeared in The Last Exorcism, and soon after made the leap to big productions with X-Men: First Class in 2011.
Risk has always been his currency.
Unlike other actors of his generation, Jones preferred projects where unease is the dominant note. In 2012, he starred in Antiviral under the direction of Brandon Cronenberg. He played a man who sells viruses from celebrities to obsessed fans. It was his first real opportunity to prove he could carry a film on the strength of an almost feverish physical presence.
And the industry took notice of his ability to unsettle audiences without saying a word. Because Caleb Landry Jones doesn't act with his voice but with spasms and a vacant stare.
There was a period of creative saturation in which the actor seemed stuck in the role of the unhinged villain. However, in 2017 he landed three projects that permanently changed his career. He appeared in Get Out, The Florida Project and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
In Jordan Peele's film, he played Jeremy Armitage (the family's unsettling brother), turning an ordinary dinner into a nightmare of contained tension. That year, the three films he appeared in earned multiple Academy Award nominations. Yet he was still living on a farm in Texas, far from the noise of Los Angeles.
Cannes fell for him in 2021.
His work in Nitram earned him the Best Actor award at the French festival. In this film directed by Justin Kurzel, he played the perpetrator of the Port Arthur massacre in Australia. Jones avoided the easy route of caricaturing the killer and opted for a portrait of loneliness and mental collapse that proved devastating for international critics.
But his career isn't limited to the big screen. The actor has an almost obsessive relationship with psychedelic music and experimental rock. In 2020, he released his first studio album, The Mother Stone, followed by Gadzooks Vol. 1 in 2021 and its sequel in 2022.
Collaborating with European directors has been a constant in his career choices. In 2023, he starred in DogMan under the direction of Luc Besson. For this role, he spent much of the shoot in a wheelchair, surrounded by dozens of dogs, and wore women's clothing in cabaret scenes.
Filming this French production demanded a level of physical commitment that few actors of his stature would have accepted without conditions. Jones spent months living alongside the animals so that the action scenes would look organic on camera.
His approach to work involves ignoring the monitor and fully trusting the instincts of the director of photography. Before filming, he reads the script only once so as not to mechanize the emotions, and he prefers controlled improvisation over rigid dialogue.
In 2025, he once again worked under Luc Besson to play the count in Dracula: A Love Tale. The production of this film had an initial budget of 100 million euros.
