Sex as a calling card

Karl Glusman arrived at Cannes in 2015 with a film many called pornographic. Love was no ordinary debut. Director Gaspar Noé signed him after seeing him in a Paris bar, and the result was total physical exposure that could have sunk his career before it started.

He survived the scandal.

Born in the Bronx in 1988, he grew up in Oregon. He studied at the William Esper Studio in New York because he needed technique to control an intensity that sometimes overwhelmed him. Before the spotlight, he worked in a sneaker store and filmed TV commercials he now prefers not to remember.

Glusman wasn't chasing quick fame in Los Angeles. He moved to France with a backpack and the intention of reinventing himself, far from TV pilot auditions. So when Noé offered him real sex on screen, the actor accepted without reading a script that barely existed.

The transition to genre cinema

In 2016 he chained together projects with cult directors. Nicolas Winding Refn cast him in The Neon Demon, and Tom Ford gave him a brief but unsettling role in Nocturnal Animals. Glusman has the kind of gaze that seems to hide a violent secret or a deep sadness.

His television work has also been selective. In 2020 he took part in the miniseries Devs under the direction of Alex Garland. He played a young man caught in a technological conspiracy, a role that demanded a restraint in his acting he had not shown before.

His physique shapes him but doesn't limit him.

But his private life crossed paths with his career when he married Zoë Kravitz in 2019. The wedding took place at Lenny Kravitz's home in Paris and drew media attention that Glusman never fully learned to handle with ease. The divorce came quietly in 2021.

A safe haven in strong supporting roles

He avoided the celebrity gossip circuit and sought out shoots that demanded more sweat than red carpets. In 2022 he starred in Watcher alongside Maika Monroe. It's a psychological thriller shot in Bucharest in which he plays a husband who ignores his wife's suspicions about a serial killer.

In 2023 he joined the cast of The Bikeriders by Jeff Nichols. He shared the screen with Austin Butler and Tom Hardy in a story about motorcycle riders, where his physical presence fills the frame without the need for long monologues. He knows how to be the center of attention without stealing the air from his co-stars.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2024 he appeared in Civil War, working again with director Alex Garland. Filming Eenie Meanie in the same 2024 marked his return to thrillers made for digital streaming platforms.

The production of this latest project had an estimated budget of twenty million dollars.
