Alicia Silverstone never set out to be the face of an era.
In 1993 her face was on televisions all over the world thanks to an Aerosmith music video. She was only sixteen and had an innate ability to steal the camera without saying a single word. That trilogy of videos for Steven Tyler's band worked like a global marketing campaign that no Hollywood studio could have paid for. But real success would not come from the music, but from a teen comedy that no one expected to become a cultural phenomenon.
In 1995 she released Clueless. The movie cost 12 million dollars and multiplied that figure by six at the U.S. box office. Silverstone played Cher Horowitz with a mix of innocence and control that serious critics did not see coming at the time. It was a role that defined the style of the nineties and earned her a contract with Columbia Pictures worth ten million dollars. That figure was astronomical for an actress of her age at the time.
The industry tried to squeeze her into the mold of the big action star. In 1997 she accepted the role of Batgirl in Batman & Robin, and the experience was a logistical and personal disaster. The rubber suit was uncomfortable and the shooting days were exhausting. But the worst part was the treatment from the British tabloid press, which started attacking her over her body weight. That media harassment was so brutal that Silverstone began to question whether she really wanted to remain part of the big studio machine.
Mainstream movies stopped being her priority.
She preferred to take refuge in smaller projects and in theater. In 2000 she worked under the direction of Kenneth Branagh in Love's Labour's Lost. It was a risky bet, since it was a musical based on Shakespeare, but she wanted to learn from the best. During that stage she turned down commercial scripts that tried to repeat the formula of her first hit. So she focused on building a career based on her own ethical and personal interests.
And the plan worked out.
In 2009 she published The Kind Diet. It was not the typical cookbook from a celebrity with spare time. Silverstone immersed herself in animal rights activism and strict veganism long before it became a social media trend. This side of her life was not an add-on to her career but the main driving force behind her professional choices. She only accepted jobs that would let her maintain her lifestyle and stay close to her family.
In 2023 she appeared in the thriller Reptile alongside Benicio del Toro. She plays a detective's wife in a story full of light and shadow, where her presence brings a much-needed calm to the narrative. It was a return to prestige cinema with a supporting role that was small but solid. In 2024 she shot the horror comedy Krazy House in the Netherlands (a project that completely breaks with her image as the California good girl). Also in 2024 she joined the cast of Y2K, a movie that plays on the fear of the end of the millennium, which she lived through firsthand.
Her 1995 contract with Columbia Pictures included a casting approval clause that very few actresses her age have ever secured in film history. She currently lives primarily in Los Angeles, in a home built entirely from recycled materials. The production budget for Batman & Robin was $160 million.
