Maika Monroe never wanted to be an actress. At seventeen, she lived on the coast of the Dominican Republic and competed professionally on the international kiteboarding circuit. Her father taught her to master the wind long before she knew how to stand in front of a film camera.

In 2012, she landed her first major role in At Any Price. She shared scenes with Zac Efron, but nobody paid much attention to her during its release. Then, just two years later, her career took a dramatic turn.

And the industry took notice.

In 2014, she starred in The Guest and It Follows. The second film cost barely two million dollars and grossed over twenty-five million worldwide. Monroe plays Jay with a distant gaze that set the tone for auteur horror without resorting to cheap jump scares.

A Refuge on the Fringes of the Genre

She worked on major studio productions such as Independence Day: Resurgence in 2016. Critics were harsh on the film, and its box-office results fell short of investors' expectations. So Monroe decided to return to independent projects, where she has full control over her image.

In 2022, she shot Watcher in Bucharest. The actress spent weeks walking alone through the streets of the Romanian capital to understand her character's isolation. She worked under the direction of Chloe Okuno, and the film earned a net profit of more than three times its initial production budget.

For 2024, she worked alongside Nicolas Cage in the horror film Longlegs. Director Osgood Perkins decided she wouldn't see Cage in character as the killer until the exact moment they shot their first scene together. Her heart rate reached 150 beats per minute, according to the monitors the sound crew wore on set.

The Number Behind the Mask

Unlike other actors of her generation, she actively avoids social media. She doesn't share her private life or pursue cosmetics endorsement deals, because she prefers audiences to see only her characters. She knows that mystery is a far more powerful marketing tool than overexposure.

In 2025, filming is scheduled to begin on They Follow. It's the sequel to the story that put her on the industry's map a decade ago. David Robert Mitchell returns to directing to try to repeat the box-office success of the first film.

The production has a $10 million budget to cover principal photography expenses.
