Avan Jogia left high school at sixteen with one fixed idea in mind. He wanted no academic degrees or graduation ceremonies. He convinced his parents to let him move to Los Angeles under one strict condition. If he didn't land a serious job within six months, he would have to return to Vancouver and go back to his books.
He landed the role of Danny Araujo in the TV movie A Girl Like Me in 2006. That was the start of a career that avoided the industry's most obvious paths. Jogia never sought to be the center of attention for the California tabloids.
The industry was watching him, but he was looking for something else.
In 2010, Nickelodeon's machine cast him to bring Beck Oliver to life in the series Victorious. That role gave him massive visibility among teen audiences. But Jogia never felt comfortable with the label of teen idol. While other actors of his generation chased quick fame, he preferred to read independent scripts in his trailer.
His shift in register came with Twisted in 2013. He played a young murder suspect, and that's when audiences realized his range was darker than it seemed. That series didn't last long. And that allowed him to explore projects that stayed off the commercial radar.
In 2015, he played Tutankhamun in the miniseries Tut. He worked alongside Ben Kingsley and learned that the weight of a historical production demands grueling physical discipline. Shooting in the Moroccan desert changed his perception of the acting craft.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
During 2017, he starred in Ghost Wars, and in 2019 he worked under Gregg Araki in Now Apocalypse. That series was a psychedelic journey through a surreal Los Angeles. It was at that point that Jogia decided acting wasn't enough for his creative ambitions.
In 2019, he published his first book, Mixed Feelings. It was no celebrity whim. The text explored his identity as a person of mixed heritage and became the foundation for his perspective as a storyteller. In 2022, he premiered Door Mouse.
He handled the screenplay and direction of this neo-noir-style film. He controlled every shot of the production to avoid interference from the major studios. The movie was shot in just twenty days on a tight budget that called for creative visual solutions.
Creative control is his top priority.
He played Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021. Critics were harsh on the film. But his physical presence suited the gritty tone director Johannes Roberts was going for. In 2024, he joined the cast of the series Orphan Black: Echoes to play Jack.
For his personal projects, he often shoots on 16mm cameras. The budget for his feature debut barely reached two million dollars. The final cut of Door Mouse was finished in a Toronto editing suite with a crew of fewer than five people.
