Matt Bennett was born in Massapequa Park in 1991. His entry into the industry was no lucky break but the result of a massive Nickelodeon casting call. In 2010, the network premiered Victorious, and his face soon appeared on millions of screens. He played Robbie Shapiro for four straight seasons.
Carrying a puppet named Rex for years tests the patience of any actor. Bennett had to learn basic ventriloquism so his scenes would look believable. The paycheck per episode made up for the typecasting that would follow.
The puppet was not optional.
Before wrapping up his television days, he tried to lead his own film projects. In 2010 he starred in The Virginity Hit, produced by Will Ferrell. Critics savaged this found-footage comedy. It earned barely three million dollars worldwide.
But the actor didn't stop after the weak box office numbers. He had a tiny role in Bridesmaids in 2011. It was a cameo of just a few seconds that barely shows up in the usual summaries of his career. So he decided to take refuge in indie music and homemade pop.
In 2012 he released a concept album titled Warm Fuzzies. He wasn't chasing commercial radio hits. It was a work with ironic lyrics about his own life in California and the problems of early fame. It sold just enough to fund his next creative phase away from television cameras.
And then serious cinema came calling.
In 2015, he joined the cast of The Stanford Prison Experiment. The film won awards at Sundance and showed a bleak side of Bennett. He played Kyle Parker in a suffocating, violent setting. It was his most serious attempt to move away from the eternal teenager image he projected on social media.
The film industry is fickle with actors who grow up on screen. Matt Bennett understood that early. In 2016, he released Terminal Cases, an album inspired by the films of Robin Williams. The record made no impact on the sales charts, but it allowed him to connect with a niche audience that still follows him to his live shows.
In 2022, his career took a different, logistical turn. He started organizing DJ sets under the name iParty at clubs across the United States. He spins songs from classic TV shows and taps into the nostalgia of the generation that grew up with him. Tickets for these events tend to sell out within minutes in cities like Chicago and New York.
His relationship with Ariana Grande has remained intact since filming his first series. In 2018 he appeared in the music video for Thank U, Next, parodying his own film role from years earlier. It's a cameo that works as an inside nod for his most loyal fans and reinforces his personal brand online.
In 2024, his main income comes from these music tours and his appearances at fan conventions. He still lives in Los Angeles and keeps a low profile in big-budget productions. The contract for his last national tour specifies a ninety-minute set each night.
