Chloë Grace Moretz was twelve years old when she learned to handle steel butterflies on the set of Kick-Ass. That Hit-Girl role in 2010 sparked a media firestorm in the United States over the explicit violence carried out by a minor. But she had already spent five years working in front of the cameras.
Her real debut came in 2005 with the remake of The Amityville Horror. There, she played the younger daughter of Ryan Reynolds in a production that grossed 108 million dollars worldwide. It was her first real encounter with horror, a genre she would revisit often during her teenage years.
No one expected a girl from Georgia to become the face of the new action cinema.
Before turning fifteen, she had already worked with Martin Scorsese on Hugo (2011). That experience changed how she understood shoots, because she discovered that filmmaking could be a precisely choreographed technical art. And she did it while juggling private tutoring with red carpets across half the planet.
For years, she accepted nearly every script that landed on her desk. She shot Carrie in 2013 and The Equalizer in 2014 with barely any break between projects. But in 2016, she hit the brakes hard. She canceled every film she had lined up in order to reconnect with her own identity away from the spotlight.
That decision was a financial and professional risk. Hollywood tends to punish those who step off the moving train (especially if they are young women). But she chose silence over continuing to play roles that offered her nothing new.
She got tired of being the product.
Her comeback was different. In 2018, she starred in The Miseducation of Cameron Post, a small film about conversion therapy that won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. That same year, she took part in the remake of Suspiria directed by Luca Guadagnino.
In 2022, she made the leap to big-budget television with The Peripheral. The Amazon Prime Video series allowed her to explore hard science fiction in a shoot shaped by visual effects and motion-capture technology. And she did it for a salary that placed her among the highest-paid actresses of her generation.
And that strategy gave her back control.
She founded her own production company, Tuna Melt Productions, together with her brother Trevor. The goal was to have a voice in the final cut and to choose stories from the development stage. In 2023, she voiced the lead character of Nimona, an animated film that Netflix rescued after Blue Sky Studios shut down.
The animated film Nimona received an Oscar nomination in 2024. Moretz recorded her dialogue in a sound booth in Los Angeles while overseeing other projects at her company. The film's production cost approximately 100 million dollars before its initial cancellation by Disney.
