Melanie Liburd was born in Hertfordshire, shaped by a mother who worked as a real estate agent and a father who was a martial arts expert. That blend of pragmatism and physical discipline eventually defined her presence in front of the camera years later. Before stepping onto a film set, she worked as a fashion model. But the world of runways soon felt too small for her.
She wanted something more than a static image.
In 2012, she landed her first credited role on the series Strike Back. It was a brief appearance. It didn't take much more for her to realize her place was in American television drama. So she moved to Los Angeles. In 2016, she appeared in Game of Thrones, playing one of the Red Priestesses in Meereen. It was a single-episode role, but her presence caught the attention of casting directors across the industry.
That same year, she joined the cast of Dark Matter as Nyx Harper. Here she drew on the fighting lessons she learned at home as a child. The series was canceled after three seasons due to production issues unrelated to the actors' performances. Liburd didn't let the setback stop her and sought roles far from pure science fiction.
The turning point came in 2018 when she joined the world of This Is Us. She played Zoe Baker. Her character wasn't simply a love interest for one of the leads. She was a documentary photographer with a complex trauma backstory and a firm decision not to have children. Nearly ten million viewers followed her story arc during the series' third season.
Then came professional maturity.
In 2020, she joined the cast of Power Book II: Ghost to play Carrie Milgram. Filming in New York allowed her to explore a much darker and more cynical register than her previous work. But television was not her only professional goal. Liburd always kept an eye on technology applied to acting and on new digital storytelling.
In 2023, she took on the role of Saga Anderson in the video game Alan Wake 2. It wasn't just a voice-over job. She went through intense motion capture sessions so that every gesture and micro-expression would be her own. The game won three awards at The Game Awards and raised her profile among audiences who don't usually watch family dramas on television. Specialist critics praised her ability to carry the emotional weight of a psychological horror story.
In 2024, she appeared in the film Bad Boys: Ride or Die alongside Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Her role as Christine firmly placed her in big summer studio productions. Filming the action scenes required precise coordination with the stunt team on location in Miami.
And the gamble paid off.
Unlike other British actors who get stuck in period roles, Liburd has moved easily between procedural drama and physical action. In 2024, her name began to surface for independent productions where she seeks control over the stories she tells. She isn't interested in fame for its own sake. She prefers to focus on craft and on building characters that don't rely on racial or gender stereotypes.
The production of the fourth installment of the Bad Boys franchise had an estimated budget of $100 million.
