From the Runway to Real Combat

In 1990, Bridgette Wilson was crowned Miss Teen USA in Biloxi. She was seventeen years old and had a contract in hand that would take her straight to the sets of Los Angeles. But her arrival in film was not the typical crash landing of a beauty queen in search of luck.

In 1993, she made her big-screen debut in Last Action Hero alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. She played the protagonist's daughter in a blockbuster that cost 85 million dollars. It was a trial by fire in an industry that was devouring new faces at a frantic pace.

The audience accepted her without question.

Her big break came in 1995 with the role of Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat. Wilson took on the challenge of performing her own stunts without stunt doubles in most of her shots. She trained for weeks to master the fight choreography because she wanted physical credibility in a genre dominated by men.

She performed all her own fight scenes with a dislocated shoulder after an accident on the first day on set. The film was a massive financial success, grossing more than 120 million dollars worldwide.

Comedy and Early Retirement

She shared the screen with Adam Sandler in Billy Madison that same year. That comedy grossed 26 million dollars and made her the ideal profile for the American middle class. But she preferred to alternate commercial projects with independent films to avoid being typecast.

In 1997, she took part in I Know What You Did Last Summer. The shoot in North Carolina was grueling due to the weather and the physical demands of the horror script. The film did well at the box office, but Wilson began choosing her projects with much more caution from that point on.

In 2000, she married tennis player Pete Sampras after a courtship of barely nine months. She chose to put her family life ahead of the scripts piling up on her nightstand. Her last major appearance in mainstream film came in 2001 with The Wedding Planner.

The industry stopped being his top priority.

She appeared in a few television episodes and minor films in the following years. Her last official acting credit dates to 2008 in the film Phantom Punch. From then on, she stepped away from the spotlight to focus on raising her two children at their home in California.

The Challenge Off Screen

Privacy defined her personal life for more than a decade, far from the Hollywood spotlight. But her family's peace was shaken by a serious health crisis. In December 2022, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which abruptly and drastically changed her routine.

Pete Sampras made the news public in October 2023 to ask for respect for his wife's privacy during her recovery. She underwent major surgery and several rounds of intensive chemotherapy to fight the disease.

And the fight remains private.

Medical treatment continued under strict professional supervision throughout 2024. The family keeps a low profile while Wilson focuses on her full physical rehabilitation at home. The cost of medication and specialized care is covered by the private fortune she built over her years of professional work.
