Cha Seung-won dropped out of the engineering program at Dankook University because runway work paid better, and his height let him stand out effortlessly. In 1988, the South Korean fashion industry was looking for fresh faces, and he had the perfect jawline for TV commercials. But his leap into film in 1997 with the movie Holiday in Seoul was a critical disaster that nearly ended his aspirations before they began.
The South Korean industry in the late nineties was harsh toward models trying to act. They were seen as talentless clothes hangers, and Cha had to accept supporting roles in questionable comedies just to stay afloat. So he decided to change strategy and use his imposing physique for absurd physical humor.
No one expected such a serious guy to be so funny.
In 2001, he achieved massive success with Kick the Moon. The film drew more than four million moviegoers to theaters and made him the highest-paid actor in comedy at the time. And he did it without giving up the intense gaze that intimidated casting directors early in his career.
Fear of being typecast in easy jokes led him to turn down big-money scripts. In 2005, he starred in Blood Rain, and the change of pace was total. It was a dark period thriller in which he played a rational detective in a world of brutal murders. The film worked because Cha stripped away every trace of his usual comedic style.
And the gamble paid off.
But her real breakout in popular culture came through television. In 2011, she played Dokko Jin in the series The Greatest Love and created a character that is still studied in Korean acting schools today. That role earned her seven national awards in a single year and showed she could carry a romantic production while playing a man already past forty.
Unlike other actors of his generation, Cha Seung-won has no problem playing the villain. In 2020, he appeared in Night in Paradise under the direction of Park Hoon-jung. His role as a veteran gangster stole every scene with a mix of extreme politeness and cold, dry violence that broke away from the clichés of the crime genre.
In 2022, he was part of the ensemble cast of Our Blues, and his portrayal of a bank employee exhausted by debt struck a chord with audiences worldwide. It was a restrained performance in which the actor set aside his usual physical magnetism to play a man defeated by the financial system. Cha knows that sometimes less is more in front of the camera.
His work pace did not slow in the following years. In 2023, he reprised his role in the sequel Believer 2 for Netflix and once again proved that his physical presence is a storytelling tool in its own right. But it is in the close-up moments of reality shows like Three Meals a Day that audiences discovered his passion for cooking and domestic order.
In 2024, he premiered the action series The Tyrant, in which he plays a mercenary tasked with cleaning up dangerous biological evidence. For this role, the production team had to commission custom wardrobe that could conceal the safety harnesses without distorting the silhouette of an actor who stands 188 centimeters tall.
