Charli D’Amelio posted her first video to a social network in May 2019. She did it from her bedroom in Norwalk, Connecticut, with no intention of turning her image into a career. But that few-second dance set off a chain reaction that Hollywood agencies were quick to notice.
The speed of her rise defied every logical industry forecast. In just a few months, she went from high school student to leading a community of more than 150 million followers. This audience size forced talent agencies to treat her as a brand before an artist.
Dance was the Trojan horse.
Her earlier training in dance competitions gave her a command of body language on camera. Before moving into film, she realized vertical framing required a different kind of technical precision. In 2019, she voiced the character Tinker in the animated film StarDog and TurboCat. That was her first real experience with a professional recording studio.
But ephemeral content has an expiration date, and her family knew it. So they decided to structure her private life in the format of reality television to secure a long-term narrative.
In 2021, The D’Amelio Show premiered. This documentary series for the Hulu platform offered a look behind the scenes of sudden fame and the psychological impact of online criticism. The project did not seek the aesthetic of short videos. Instead, it embraced a raw tone where silence and anxiety were the main focus.
The show ran for several seasons until 2023. During that time, Charli D’Amelio used the series to shake off her image as an internet dancer. She wanted to prove she could carry a real dramatic arc in front of television cameras.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2022, she competed in the 31st season of Dancing with the Stars. She won the competition alongside Mark Ballas after earning perfect scores in several episodes. That victory on mainstream American television earned her a professional respect that the digital world still denied her.
That same year, she starred in her first leading role in genre film. The movie, Home School, was marketed as a supernatural thriller in which she played Mira. In this production, she portrayed a young woman who moves to a new town only to discover that her arrival was no coincidence.
Her leap onto the New York stage came in 2024. D’Amelio joined the cast of the musical & Juliet at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre to play the role of Charmian. It was a risky move, since musical theater allows no editing or social media filters.
Her Broadway run demanded daily physical and vocal training. New York theater critics closely scrutinized her ability to sing live. Still, her presence in the cast drew a young audience that had never set foot in a theater on 44th Street.
Her business grew alongside her acting training.
In 2023, she launched her own fragrance, Born Dreamer, and diversified her investments into tech and fashion companies. She and her sister Dixie built a business structure that brought in nearly 17 million dollars in a single fiscal year. Control over her own image allowed her to turn down endorsement deals that didn't fit her film strategy.
Her contract for the musical & Juliet ended in October 2024 after she completed three months of uninterrupted performances. That year she also developed new fiction projects under her family's own production company. The budget for her latest footwear campaign exceeded the production cost of many independent films from that same period.
