Charlotte Emma Aitchison borrowed money from her parents in 2008 to record her first album at fourteen. That work, titled 14, never had a major commercial release, but it gave her a way into the illegal party scene of east London. That is where Charli xcx was born, among damp walls and speakers that distorted sound until it was unbearable.
The industry didn't know what to do with her.
But her talent for crafting sticky melodies was too obvious to ignore. In 2012 she wrote I Love It and handed it to the Swedish duo Icona Pop, because she herself didn't quite fit the spirit of the song. The track sold more than ten million copies worldwide and gave her the financial freedom she needed to start breaking the rules of pop from within.
For years her name appeared in the credits of major radio hits while she searched for a sound of her own. In 2014 she released Sucker and put Boom Clap on the soundtrack of the movie The Fault in Our Stars. It was her biggest moment of mainstream commercial exposure, but the conventional star persona felt far too tight. So she decided to blow up her own public image.
She teamed up with the PC Music collective and producer SOPHIE to give birth to the EP Vroom Vroom in 2016. It sounded like metal clashing with plastic, and many critics thought it was a career misstep. They were wrong.
That movement defined the aesthetic of the following decade.
In 2019 she released the album Charli, and in 2020 she used lockdown to record How I’m Feeling Now in just five weeks. This latter record is a technical document about anxiety and isolation, produced entirely with home digital tools. The artist proved she could lead a sonic avant-garde without leaving her bedroom.
Because pop doesn't have to be nice.
Charli xcx's relationship with film has gone from soundtrack work to a physical presence in front of the camera. In 2022 she took part in the voice cast of Angry Birds and had a role in the Thai film Faces of Anne. But her real leap into arthouse cinema came a little later, with more dramatically ambitious projects.
In 2024, she composed the music for the A24 film Mother Mary and joined the cast of I Want Your Sex under the direction of Gregg Araki. Her profile fits the new wave of productions seeking faces with a very distinctive aesthetic and a loyal fan base. In 2025, Eenie Meenie is set for release, where she plays a bank robber.
And success hasn't softened her.
Her album Brat from 2024 brought back the grit of her early days in London clubs with minimalist production. The record debuted at number two on the UK charts and sparked a visual phenomenon built around acid green. Despite millions of streams, she still handles much of her communication directly and without corporate filters. The technical production of her live shows in 2025 uses a strobe lighting system that consumes 40 kilowatt-hours.
