Chisa Yokoyama was seventeen years old when she entered Nachi Nozawa's voice acting school. She wasn't chasing easy applause but learning a craft that, in the Japan of the 1980s, was professionalizing at a wild pace. In 1987, she landed her first professional role in the OVA Black Magic M-66, and that started a career that avoided the spotlight of conventional film to lock itself inside the recording booth.
The truth is, her voice didn't fit the flat molds of the era. She had a texture that could leap from extreme fragility to military authority without the viewer noticing the seam. That's why she caught the attention of casting directors looking for more than a pretty face for anime magazine covers.
That phenomenon caught many people by surprise.
Before turning twenty, she was already working steadily on live-action productions. But it was her ability to grasp comedic timing that set her apart from her generation. In 1992, her role in Tenchi Muyo! as Sasami gave her a visibility that crossed Japan's borders thanks to the massive export of VHS tapes to the West.
In 1996, the release of Sakura Wars for the Sega Saturn console changed the game for her. Playing Sakura Shinguji meant far more than reading lines of dialogue at a microphone. The project required Yokoyama to become a complete performer, capable of singing on hit records and acting in real theaters for years.
It was an absolute commitment that lasted more than a decade. She led the Teikoku Kagekidan group in live performances, where vocal precision had to be maintained while executing complex choreography. But the physical toll of constant tours and the pressure of being the visible face of a multimillion-dollar franchise nearly forced her to step back from the front lines ahead of schedule.
The industry did not expect that resistance.
Because Yokoyama chose to diversify her range so she wouldn't get stuck in the role of the young samurai. In Mobile Suit Gundam Wing she voiced Lucrezia Noin (a much more mature and restrained character), showing she could handle military sci-fi storytelling with the same skill as romantic drama. That's how her name stayed on the most demanding casting lists of the 1990s.
In 2011, she took on one of her most technically demanding challenges by voicing Biscuit Krueger in the Hunter x Hunter version produced by the Madhouse studio. She had to balance the appearance of a small girl with the mindset of a fifty-year-old martial arts master. It was a work of sonic craftsmanship that avoided the easy tools of overacting to give the character absolute credibility.
Over the years, she decided it was time to give back what she had learned. In 2014, she launched her own training program for new voice acting talent (following in the footsteps of her mentor Nozawa). She preferred the calm of the classroom to the frenzy of the mass events that were beginning to dominate the industry at the time.
And she returned to the universe that brought her fame.
In 2019, she took part in the new video game in the Sakura Wars series, playing a mysterious celebrity named Yaksha. It was not a leading role, but her presence helped confirm the franchise's continuity for new players. In 2020, she reprised the same role in the animated series produced by Sanzigen, where her voice retained the same firmness it had thirty years earlier.
Her personal discography includes twelve studio albums recorded between 1992 and 2005. She currently devotes herself to managing her catalog and making occasional guest appearances on radio programs focused on the history of Japanese voice acting. The contract for her most recent mobile video game project was signed for a single six-hour recording session.
