Choi Moo-seong never sought fame when he left for Japan to study image and visual arts. He returned to South Korea intending to direct theater, but ended up in front of the camera out of sheer professional momentum. In 2010, director Kim Jee-woon cast him as a cannibal in I Saw the Devil.
It was a brutal debut. That performance as a ruthless killer gave him a name in the genre film industry.
His training was technical and quiet.
Before that role, his real name was Choi Myeong-su. He decided to change it to Choi Moo-seong to separate his private life from the intensity of the characters he was beginning to receive. But his rugged build and heavy gaze soon typecast him in thug or criminal roles.
And the bet on a change of image paid off in the casting offices.
South Korean audiences took five years to see another side of him. In 2015, he played the father of Choi Taek in Reply 1988. He was a widowed, quiet, extremely shy man who ran a watch repair shop. That role broke his image as a violent man for good.
Many viewers couldn't believe that the gentle father in the series was the same psychopath who terrorized audiences Lee Byung-hun years earlier. Choi has the ability to change his body temperature on screen without moving a single facial muscle.
And then everything changed.
In 2017 he took part in Prison Playbook, playing a prisoner sentenced to death. The series was a massive ratings hit. His ability to humanize criminals became his biggest commercial asset compared with other actors of his generation.
In 2018, he joined the cast of Mr. Sunshine, playing a shooting instructor. The project had a budget of 40,000 million won. It was one of the most expensive productions in Korean television history up to that point.
The industry never stopped calling.
During 2020, he joined the second season of Stranger as a corrupt prosecutor. His performance was restrained. Choi knows that on television, excessive gestures tend to ruin the tension of the script.
In 2023 he filmed The Good Bad Mother and My Dearest. In the latter, he played Yang-cheon in a historical war drama atmosphere. His schedule stayed full while other members of his graduating class disappeared from the main credits.
In 2024, his role in Gyeongseong Creature confirmed that he remains an essential supporting actor for streaming platforms. His contract for the series The Brave Yong Soo-jung in 2024 closed a cycle of shoots that surpassed sixty productions in less than two decades.
