Claire van der Boom is no teen poster girl. Her career took shape at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, where she graduated in 2005 alongside a class chasing quick fame. She preferred the emotional grit of theater and local productions before crossing the pond.
In 2008 she starred in The Square under the direction of Nash Edgerton. That Australian noir was the key that opened doors with casting directors in the United States. But before leaving, she gave a raw performance in the series Rush that Australian television still remembers for its lack of artifice.
Her real breakthrough came in 2010. Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks cast her in the HBO miniseries The Pacific. She played Stella, a Greek young woman in Melbourne who has a brief romance with a Marine. It was a short role, but it carried a melancholy that helped her avoid generic blonde roles in California.
The American industry is a monster that devours subtleties.
In 2010 she also filmed Sisters of War. For this role she won the Logie Award for Best Actress. She played Sister Berenice Twohill in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. It was a grueling, physically demanding shoot in extreme weather conditions that left her with several real scars.
For years she balanced her life between continents. In 2010 she joined the cast of Hawaii Five-0 as Rachel Edwards. It wasn't the role of a lifetime, but it gave her the financial stability she needed to choose riskier projects back home. After all, living in Los Angeles without a steady paycheck is a recipe for professional disaster.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2014 she starred in Love Is Now, and in 2015 she joined Chicago Med. On the latter, she played Kelly, Lieutenant Severide's sister. It was a stint in American network television that taught her how big-budget productions work, where time is money and creativity is measured in seconds of advertising.
But the heart of her filmography remains in independent cinema. In 2016 she shot Broke, a story about the downfall of a rugby star. There she proved that her ability to convey quiet pain was still intact despite years of constant media exposure.
In 2020 she returned to horror with Black Water: Abyss. Andrew Traucki's film placed her in flooded caves fighting crocodiles. Sometimes prestige gets tired of itself and craves pure adrenaline to shake off the dust of period dramas and intense dialogue.
Prestige comes at a high price in sleep hours.
In 2024 she starred in Kid Snow. This drama is set in the world of traveling boxing matches in Australia in the 1970s. Her performance as Sunny portrays a woman surviving in a world of testosterone and dust. For this role, she spent weeks living with rural communities in the Australian outback.
In 2024 she also appeared in the second season of the series The Twelve. The production was filmed entirely on location in Western Australia under strict environmental sustainability protocols.
