Clare Dunne finished her studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2009. She had no Plan B and no safety net in the British industry. In Dublin, people already knew about her ability to carry impossible monologues on stage, but film had not yet knocked on her door with a serious offer.
For years, her natural habitat was the stage. She worked with the Druid company and honed her craft at the Abbey Theatre, performing classics that demanded exhausting physical commitment. In 2015, she starred in Grounded, a play in which she played a combat drone pilot. That performance required eighty minutes of nonstop monologue under a suffocating spotlight.
And the gamble paid off.
That physical resilience caught the attention of Phyllida Lloyd. The director cast her in her all-female Shakespeare trilogy at the Donmar Warehouse. Dunne didn't just act; she brought a raw energy that broke away from the academic conventions of Irish acting. But money was scarce, and stability was a fantasy for a stage actress in her thirties.
The idea for writing Herself came from a phone call with a friend who had become homeless. Dunne felt a rage she couldn't channel by acting alone. In 2020, she premiered the film at the Sundance Film Festival, and the world discovered that, besides acting, she knew how to tell stories about the housing crisis from a place of raw pain.
It was not a quick process. It took several years to get the project off the ground with screenwriter Malcolm Campbell. The story of Sandra, a mother who decides to build her own house to escape an abuser, avoided the cheap sentimentality of typical social dramas. Dunne wrote the role for herself because no one was offering her characters with that level of structural complexity.
She sold the rights to Amazon Studios for a seven-figure sum.
That move changed her standing in the industry overnight. She stopped being the supporting actress who appeared briefly in Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019 and started leading her own projects. In 2021, she joined the cast of The Last Duel under Ridley Scott (playing Ceclie), sharing the set with Jodie Comer and Matt Damon.
Her widespread recognition came with the release of Kin in 2021. In this crime drama, she plays Amanda Kinsella, a woman who goes from the edges of her family to taking control of a drug cartel in Dublin. Dunne builds the character through silence and restraint. She avoids the usual mobster clichés to focus on a chilling, technical coldness that proves far more unsettling.
But her career did not stop at crime drama.
In 2024, she appeared in Small Things Like These alongside Cillian Murphy. Based on the novel by Claire Keegan, the film deals with abuse in the Magdalene laundries in Ireland. Dunne plays Sister Mary with a restraint that earned her praise at the Berlin Film Festival. Filming took place on real locations in County Wexford during the winter.
Dunne keeps her residence in Dublin and resists the pressure to move permanently to Los Angeles. She prefers projects with a clear local root, even when their distribution is global. In 2024, she shot The Witness, a legal thriller in which she plays a defense attorney up against a corrupt system. The production contract included twenty-two days of principal photography on interiors in Dublin.
