Colton Dunn is not the typical actor who sits around waiting for the phone to ring. His career was forged in the humid comedy basements of Chicago and Los Angeles, where he learned that silence is just as valuable as the most elaborate punchline.
In 1998, he began honing his craft at the Boom Chicago improv theater. It was a school of creative survival where mistakes didn't exist. But the real change of pace came when he moved to Los Angeles to join the Upright Citizens Brigade.
Sarcasm was his currency.
In 2012, he joined the writing team of Key & Peele. He didn't just put words in other people's mouths, because Dunn understood the mechanics of racial and social humor from a cynical perspective. He took part in 53 episodes as a writer and producer, and that technical experience gave him a competitive edge over actors who only knew how to read lines.
When the role of Garrett McNeill in Superstore came along in 2015, the industry finally noticed him. The character used a wheelchair, but the storyline never revolved around his disability. It was a deliberate decision by the producers and by Dunn himself to avoid cheap sentimentality.
He played Cloud 9's employee for 113 episodes until the series finale in 2021. His character was the anchor of reality in a comedy that often bordered on the absurd. And the gamble paid off.
Nearly six million viewers tuned in on average to follow his character during the first seasons. Dunn made a guy who hated his job magnetic to audiences.
Not everything came easily at first.
Before that breakout, he spent years landing tiny roles on shows like Parks and Recreation and The League. In 2015, he starred in the science fiction film Lazer Team, shot on a tight budget with production days running past twelve hours under the Texas sun.
In 2022, he joined the cast of The Recruit to play Lester Kitchens. It's a more subdued role within a CIA espionage setting on Netflix. The move from sitcom to political thriller called for a dry, direct change of tone.
The series filmed its second season during 2024, with locations spread between Vancouver and Seoul. Dunn remained a top-tier supporting player, bringing comic relief right when the drama reaches its peak tension.
His contract for these episodes included temporary exclusivity clauses.
In 2023, he took part in the series The Big Door Prize for Apple TV+. That same year, he voiced characters in Star Trek: Lower Decks, confirming that his career works better across multiple platforms than in big studio films. Filming of his final scenes for The Recruit wrapped in March 2024 under the direction of Julian Holmes.
