Danny Chan was in a Hong Kong café when Stephen Chow spotted him.
He wasn't a professional actor looking for a break but a dance choreographer with an unsettling physical resemblance to a dead legend. That chance encounter in 2001 changed the structure of the commercial martial arts films of the decade.
The resemblance was both his curse and his lucky break.
In Shaolin Soccer he played the goalkeeper who wore the yellow jumpsuit of Bruce Lee. It was a visual tribute that worked because Chan didn't try to forcibly imitate the gestures but projected a natural electric energy. The film grossed over $42 million at the international box office and took him from the dance studio onto movie sets.
Three years later came Kung Fu Hustle. Here he stopped being a living tribute and led the Axe Gang with a staging that mixed elegance and sharp violence. The gangsters' opening dance is still one of the most studied sequences for its precise rhythm.
In 2008 he starred in the series The Legend of Bruce Lee. It was 50 episodes in which he had to carry the weight of a national myth. The pressure was suffocating, but the audience in China broke the screen-share ceilings of the past five years.
And the audience accepted the baton.
But typecasting is a real problem when your face constantly reminds people of someone else. Chan spent years trying to get directors to look beyond his cheekbones and sharp gaze. In 2015 he returned to the big screen with Ip Man 3 under director Wilson Yip (where he once again played the young dragon).
Because the Chinese market didn't want Danny Chan unless he was there to remind audiences of Bruce Lee. So he accepted the challenge of perfecting the Wing Chun style so his movements would be indistinguishable from the originals. In 2019 he closed that life-defining circle with Ip Man 4: The Finale, facing off against Scott Adkins on screen.
Off camera he keeps a low profile and focuses on the technical production of stunt scenes. In 2022 he took part in New Kung Fu Cult Master, playing Sung Yuen-kiu. It's a role that demands a physical maturity that only comes after decades of training in contact disciplines.
His contracts often include specific clauses about the preparation time for choreography. He doesn't accept fast-paced action shoots without a minimum of eight weeks of rehearsal beforehand to coordinate camera angles with the real impacts.
Filming his outdoor fight sequences usually involves 14 hours of technical adjustments to avoid overusing wires.
