Darlanne Fluegel did not arrive in Los Angeles with a plan. Her entry into the industry was a visual accident that began on the runways of New York under the wing of Eileen Ford. In 1978 she made her debut in Eyes of Laura Mars playing a model, because that was exactly what she did in real life.
That first small role helped casting directors notice her icy gaze. But auteur cinema soon claimed her. In 1984, Sergio Leone chose her to play Eve in Once Upon a Time in America, and her career changed scale.
And the gamble paid off.
On Leone's set she learned that silence can say more than shouted dialogue. Her character was the emotional counterpoint in a story about violent, ambitious men. The film marked her entry into the league of major international productions, despite the editing problems the movie suffered during its U.S. release.
William Friedkin sought a gritty realism for To Live and Die in L.A. in 1985. Fluegel played Ruth Lanier and brought a vulnerability that was rare in the action films of that decade. She worked without makeup in many scenes to heighten the rawness of her character.
But her biggest commercial success came a year later. In 1986 she starred in Running Scared alongside Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. The film grossed 38 million dollars at the North American box office and cemented her as an actress capable of carrying dramatic weight opposite male stars with real chemistry.
She left the comfort zone of film to try her luck in prestige television. Between 1986 and 1987 she brought to life Julie Torello in Crime Story, produced by Michael Mann. The series demanded a frenetic shooting pace that ended up exhausting much of the original cast.
It was a risky decision.
In 1990 she joined the cast of Wiseguy to play Amber Twine in a multi-episode arc. That role let her explore psychological nuances that action films denied her. Fluegel always preferred characters with secrets over the flat, by-the-book heroines.
In the late nineties, her work at the major studios began to decline due to a mix of a lack of interesting roles and personal choice. In 1994 she shot Relative Fear, and soon after decided her experience was worth more in the classroom than on B-movie sets. In 2002 she moved to Florida to give her career a new direction.
She later taught acting at the University of Central Florida for several years. She taught on-camera acting techniques to hundreds of students who had no idea about her past as a muse of crime films. Her last on-screen appearance was in the short film The Souler Opposite in 1998.
The industry forgot her quickly.
In 2017, she died at her home in Orlando at age 64. Her family confirmed she had been living with Alzheimer's since her diagnosis at age 56. Her death certificate closed a career that moved between the glow of stardom and complete discretion, by someone who never needed fame to feel like an actress.
