The office he never set foot in

David Al-Chokhachy completed his Political Science degree at Bates College in 1990. He had the diploma in hand and a future mapped out in the offices of Massachusetts. But the Atlantic water was too cold, and he decided California was a better destination for someone who spent more time on a surfboard than reading international treaties.

He arrived in Los Angeles with no connections. He took whatever work he could find while looking for a break in advertising. He wasn't chasing Shakespearean prestige. He was trying to pay the rent.

And the gamble paid off.

In 1995, he landed the role of Cody Madison in Baywatch. He came in to replace David Charvet, which was no simple task for a newcomer. The show was a global phenomenon at the time, with more than 1,100 million viewers worldwide. David Chokachi didn't just inherit a red swimsuit. He inherited the pressure of keeping the golden goose of first-run syndication afloat.

He spent four years running along the sand in Santa Monica. The work was physical and demanding. He had to train every day to maintain a physique that could sell posters across half the planet. On that production, the body was the main script.

The asphalt after the sand

Many of his teammates faded away once they hung up the whistle. Chokachi decided he didn't want to be just a pretty face under the sun. In 2001 he traded the ocean for the asphalt of New York to star in Witchblade. He played Detective Jake McCartey. It was a smart move to shake off the image of the eternal tanned teen.

The series performed well on the TNT network for two seasons. But internal production problems and filming costs brought the project to an end in 2002. It was his first real taste of the industry's instability outside the protected bubble of big hits.

There was no turning back.

Between 2006 and 2009 he returned to his natural element with Beyond the Break. He played Justin Healy in a show that blended teen drama with professional surfing. The series was filmed entirely in Hawaii. For him, it wasn't just work. It was a way to fund his lifestyle tied to ocean conservation and the Surfrider Foundation.

Production and survival in B-movies

Growing up meant he had to look for gaps in independent film and genre productions. In 2009 he took part in the show Confessions of a Teen Idol. It was an honest exercise in which former teen idols talked about losing fame. But Chokachi never stopped working.

In 2019 he appeared in As Long As I’m Famous. It was an attempt to revive the tone of classic Hollywood stories. A year later, in 2020, he headed the cast of Emerald Run, an adventure film in which he plays a man who smuggles emeralds across the Mexican border to save his daughter.

He moves comfortably in the video-on-demand market. He knows his name still carries weight in international markets. In 2021 he premiered Last Call in the Dog House. It's a drama with spiritual undertones that moves far away from the physical action of his early days.

And he keeps adding credits.

In 2022, he worked on three different projects, including Love on the Reef and the family film Adeline. He also appeared in A Christmas Present for cable television. David Chokachi has understood that longevity in film doesn't always depend on awards. It depends on being available when the phone rings for a low-budget shoot.

In 2023, he shot the adventure film The Legend of Catclaws Mountain under the direction of Richie Greer.
