From Red Swimsuit to Directing the Set

In 1998, Brooke Burns put on the Baywatch uniform to play Jessie Owens. She was barely twenty years old and had previously trained in classical ballet, which she had to give up due to a knee injury. Modeling was her temporary refuge before television cameras claimed her for good.

That shoot on the beaches of Hawaii didn't call for grand dramatic displays. But Burns quickly understood that the industry valued телегenic appeal and discipline above any complex acting method. Her time on the series lasted until 2001, and it taught her how large-scale productions work.

That was her real school.

In 2002, she made the leap to hosting with Dog Eat Dog. The show of physical and mental challenges allowed her to move away from the beach girl image. On this program, she showed an unusual ability to handle live timing and contestant pressure. The audience responded well, and her name began to be mentioned for more ambitious scripted projects on Fox.

She played Jennifer Savage on the series North Shore from 2004 to 2005. The series filmed 21 episodes before being canceled due to low ratings. That commercial failure coincided with an event that nearly ended her life out of the spotlight.

The Accident That Stopped the Clock

In November 2005, Brooke Burns dove headfirst into her private pool without judging the depth. The impact with the bottom caused a cervical fracture that could have left her quadriplegic. A friend who was a doctor and happened to be present immobilized her neck before emergency services arrived.

There was no turning back in her mindset after that.

She spent months in rehab and needed ten screws and a titanium plate surgically inserted in her neck to regain mobility. This physical trauma kept her away from action shoots but not from television. In 2006, she returned to work on the series Pepper Dennis alongside Rebecca Romijn. The pace of work was exhausting, but Burns refused to use stunt doubles for the longer dialogue scenes.

But the television series market was changing, and she found an unexpected haven in television movies. In 2008, she starred in The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. It was the start of a very profitable relationship with the Hallmark channel that would last more than a decade.

Specializing in the Mystery Genre

In 2013, Burns took on the challenge of hosting the American version of The Chase. Her role as mediator between the contestants and the data expert put her at the forefront of game shows. For this work, she received an Emmy Award nomination in 2015 for Outstanding Game Show Host.

She balanced studio work with the Gourmet Detective film series. Between 2015 and 2020, she shot five installments of this franchise, playing detective Maggie Price. Filming for each movie usually lasted only fifteen days due to the network's tight budgets.

In 2020, the Game Show Network hired her to host Master Minds. The format pitted everyday citizens against general knowledge experts in a battle of quick thinking. The show was consistently renewed for new seasons and, in 2023, reached 65 episodes produced per cycle.

Production on Master Minds stayed active until May 2024. Burns signed a contract that required her to shoot up to five episodes in a single twelve-hour workday. The production cost of each block of shows was estimated at 1.2 million dollars.
