David Twohy didn't start with spaceships or monsters lurking in the dark. In 1993, he wrote the screenplay for The Fugitive, and the industry discovered a writer capable of handling mechanical tension with almost surgical precision. That film earned seven Oscar nominations.
Before that success, Twohy had already worked in B-movies with Critters 2 in 1988. But his true ambition lay behind the camera. Writing for others paid the bills, but it didn't give him full control over the atmosphere of his stories.
In 1992, he made his directorial debut with Timescape. It was a low-key entry in the time-travel genre. But it helped lay the groundwork for what came next.
The year 1996 was pivotal for his career with the release of The Arrival. The film depicted a quiet, atmospheric alien invasion that departed from the explosion-driven action of the era. Charlie Sheen led the cast of a movie now studied as a cult classic of paranoid science fiction.
But the real turning point came in 2000.
With a budget of just 23 million dollars, he shot Pitch Black in the deserts of Australia. Nobody at the studio had much faith in an unknown actor named Vin Diesel. The premise was simple and effective: a group of space castaways must survive an endless night full of carnivorous creatures.
And the gamble paid off.
The film multiplied its budget and built a fan base that demanded more about the character of Riddick. So in 2004, Twohy tried to expand that world with The Chronicles of Riddick. It was a leap into the unknown on a 100 million dollar budget, and critics tore it apart for its excessive mythology.
After the financial stumble of his galactic epic, Twohy sought refuge in smaller projects. In 2009, he directed A Perfect Getaway on the landscapes of Hawaii. It's a tricky suspense thriller that keeps toying with viewers' expectations right up to the final minute.
In 2013, he returned to austerity with Riddick. He abandoned the grandiosity of the previous installment to go back to a survival structure on a hostile planet. The film was independently financed and proved that Twohy handles enclosed spaces better than large digital battles.
The director has always kept a low profile in the power circles of Los Angeles. He prefers technical work and developing scripts that challenge the logic of the conventional hero.
In 2024, the director began shooting Riddick: Furya on location in Germany and Spain. This fourth installment closes a production cycle that has lasted more than two decades under his direct leadership. Principal photography was scheduled with a plan of seven intensive weeks of fieldwork.
