Pitch Black, directed by David Twohy and starring Vin Diesel, opens aboard a transport ship crossing space with prisoners on board. Among them is Riddick, a dangerous criminal being transported to a prison. Most of the passengers are asleep in hypersleep while the autopilot keeps the course. But the ship passes through the tail of a comet, and debris damages the hull and forces the crew to wake up. Greg Owens and Carolyn Fry, the pilot and co-pilot, struggle to control the descent toward a desert planet. The landing is forced, and the survivors must decide what to do with a man no one wants near them.

Trivia about Pitch Black

The original concept was suggested by David Madden during his time at Interscope Communications. Its early antagonists were ghosts, which survived the first draft before being replaced by physical predators.

To differentiate the various suns in some daytime scenes, the filmmakers applied a bleach bypass process during post-production.

Pitch Black was the last film credit of PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, which merged with Universal Pictures while the film was in production.

Twohy ended up with three leads who each believed they were the main one, which, by his own account, caused plenty of ego clashes on set.

The shoot in the Australian desert took place at temperatures of around 10 °C, so the crew sprayed water on the actors to simulate sweat.

Vin Diesel’s prototype contact lenses for playing Riddick could not be removed after the first day of filming, which forced the crew to bring in an optometrist from a town three hours away.

Vin Diesel performed the move for the crew in which Riddick dislocates his shoulder, though he had to do it while holding a chain because he could not repeat it with the handcuffs on.

The film grossed 53,187,659 dollars worldwide, including 39,240,659 dollars in North America, against a budget of 23 million.

Quotes by Pitch Black

All you people are so scared of me. Most days, I take that as a compliment. But it ain't me you got to worry about now.
[about the passengers] I'm not gonna die for them!
Why don't you shut up for two seconds and let me come up with a plan that doesn't involve mass suicide?
I had the impression from the model... the two planets were moving as one...and there would be a lasting darkness.
It's amazing how you can do without the necessities of life provided you have the little luxuries.
Did I kill a few people? Sure. Did I kill Zeke? No. You got the wrong killer.
