Davis Cleveland landed at Disney Channel studios at just eight years old. He wasn't the typical kid-catalog type. He had a jittery energy that fit the role of Flynn Jones in Shake It Up perfectly.
The series premiered in 2010 and changed his reality overnight. He shared the set with future industry heavyweights, but he handled the comic relief. He signed a contract for three full seasons before the audience passed judgment.
And the gamble paid off.
But the production pace was exhausting for a minor. They filmed Monday through Friday, with mandatory tutoring sessions between takes. Cleveland juggled scripts with appearances on Hannah Montana and Zeke and Luther during that same period.
In 2011, he appeared in the music video for the song Monster Mash. It was a typical marketing move at the studio to capitalize on the appeal of his youthful looks. The children's entertainment industry gives no breaks, and the actor was shooting one project after another with barely any downtime between roles.
When Shake It Up ended in 2013, many expected Cleveland to fade away like so many other former child stars. But the actor turned to direct competition instead. In 2016, he starred in Nickelodeon's original movie titled Rufus.
He played a dog who turns into a human. It was an absurd premise that required very specific physical control. The film drew 2.9 million viewers on its opening night in the United States. That figure proved his ability to carry a project as the undisputed lead.
The same story repeated itself a year later.
In 2017, he filmed the sequel Rufus 2. By then his physical appearance had changed dramatically, and the high-pitched voice of childhood was gone. The producers adjusted the tone of the story to keep up with his natural growth.
Because the youth market tends to punish puberty. So Cleveland began diversifying his interests beyond traditional film sets. He got into music and released the single I Am, with a style that aimed to move away from the manufactured sound of his earlier years.
After the release of his latest projects in 2017, the actor decided to lower his public profile. There were no major retirement announcements or official statements on social media. He simply stopped showing up on the casting lists of the major networks.
Cleveland chose a more private life in Texas. He stepped away from the Los Angeles bubble to focus on personal growth and on activities far from the tabloids. He kept a low profile on digital platforms, where he shared glimpses of his love for video games and family life.
His departure from the A-list wasn't a failure.
Many child actors go through traumatic transitions into adult life. Cleveland preferred relative anonymity over accepting mediocre roles that would only exploit the nostalgia of his Disney days. In 2021, his public appearances were practically nonexistent outside of very specific events.
Production on Rufus 2 had a operating budget that didn't exceed the standard cable television budgets of the time. Filming took place mainly on location in British Columbia, Canada, over a four-week period. Cleveland fulfilled his contract and returned to his usual home without renewing with the network for future feature films.
