Haley Tju was seven years old when she appeared in a Pizza Hut commercial. It was 2008, and while other kids were learning to ride bikes, she was already memorizing lines under the California sun. That small advertising gig was the start of a run that would keep going for the next two decades.
Advertising money paid for her first childhood indulgences.
Disney and Nickelodeon wasted no time knocking on her door. She appeared in Hannah Montana and The Suite Life on Deck in roles that barely lasted a few minutes on screen. They were fleeting but necessary characters for understanding how the machinery of youth series works in the United States.
In 2015, she landed the role of Pepper in Bella and the Bulldogs. It was a typical Nickelodeon production with canned laughter and saturated colors. But Tju brought a jittery energy that set her apart from the rest of the cast. She signed a contract for 39 episodes, which gave her the financial stability to make better choices for her next steps.
And the gamble paid off.
When cameras were no longer her absolute priority, she found a niche in animated voice work. In 2016, she began voicing Marcy Wu in the series Amphibia. This job allowed her to stay in the industry without the constant pressure of physical appearance or the mandatory red carpets.
In 2019, her career shifted with Trinkets. This Netflix series about shoplifting teenage girls moved her decisively away from sitcoms. She played Rachelle and steered clear of the Asian stereotypes that often plague low-budget productions. The series ran for two seasons before the platform canceled it.
Because sometimes critical acclaim doesn't save the ratings.
During the filming of these productions, Tju kept a low profile in the Los Angeles tabloids. As a result, her name has never been linked to scandals or to the falls from grace of other former child stars from her generation. She simply focused on her work and studied photography in her free time between takes.
In 2024, she returned to the universe that helped raise her with the premiere of The Thundermans Return. It was a nostalgia play aimed at the generation that watched cable TV in the 2010s. Tju reprised her role as Lulu to close a chapter that many fans had considered finished years earlier.
That same year, she joined the cast of The Spiderwick Chronicles. The series premiered on Roku Channel after Disney+ decided not to air it for tax-related reasons. It was a big-budget production that ended up on a smaller platform because of the financial moves of the major corporations.
But the Vancouver shoot wrapped on schedule and with a top-notch crew. The production contract required ten-hour workdays on location. Filming officially ended in May with a private dinner for the crew at a restaurant downtown.
