The Typist in the Minneapolis Basement

Brook Busey wrote a blog from her cubicle at an advertising agency in Minneapolis. She called herself Diablo Cody because she liked how that word sounded in an Arcadia song. She published Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper in 2005, and the publishing world discovered that the woman who danced in seedy clubs had perfect pitch for street dialogue.

That memoir was not just a chronicle of full nudity. It was the calling card of a writer who handled teen slang and pop culture with surgical precision. Her leap into film was not a slow transition but an explosion that caught Hollywood off guard.

And the script for Juno came out of nowhere.

She wrote the story of a pregnant teenager at a supermarket-chain café. The script reached Jason Reitman, and in 2008 Cody took home the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay wearing a leopard-print dress. Critics accused her of being too stylized, but audiences connected with a way of talking that no one had dared put on screen.

But massive success often comes with a high price in the form of constant scrutiny. The press became obsessed with her past as a stripper and tried to reduce her career to a passing trend. She responded with genre-driven stories that the industry failed to process at the time.

The Flop That Became a Cult Classic

In 2009, Jennifer's Body premiered with Megan Fox as the lead. The film was savaged by the male critics of the time and performed poorly at the global box office. Studios sold it as a horror movie for hormonal teens, when in fact it was a fierce satire of toxic female friendship and trauma.

It took ten years for the film to be rediscovered by a new generation of female viewers. Time put that script, which mixed cannibalism with the anxiety of high school, in its rightful place. That commercial flop did not stop her, but it did change how she understood production at the major studios.

And the gamble paid off.

Cody decided to step away from the media noise and focus on darker, less likable characters. She teamed up again with Jason Reitman to shoot Young Adult in 2011. Charlize Theron played a young adult novelist stuck in the past who returns to her hometown to win back a former boyfriend. It was a raw portrait of functional depression and immaturity that had nothing to do with the brightness of her early work.

Real Motherhood and Broadway Stages

The collaboration with Reitman wrapped up in 2018 with Tully. This time the script dissected motherhood through extreme physical and mental exhaustion. Cody wrote about bodies that change and minds that break under the weight of domestic caregiving. The film avoided the clichés of family comedies to fully enter the territory of psychological drama.

Outside of film, she explored other formats with the same sharp edge as always. She created the series United States of Tara for Showtime and won a Tony Award in 2020 for the book of the musical Jagged Little Pill. Her writing has always worked best when it leans on music or on characters who live on the fringes of social normalcy.

In 2024, she returned to genre film with Lisa Frankenstein. The project was directed by Zelda Williams and revived the eighties aesthetic that Cody has always handled with ease. The film was shot on a budget of $13 million and premiered in February of that same year, distributed by Focus Features.

The production featured costume design by Meagan McLaughlin, and principal photography took place entirely on location in New Orleans.
