Doon Mackichan has never needed to ask permission to take center stage.
In 1994, she was part of the team that shook up British television with The Day Today. That satire of news broadcasts did not just poke fun at the pomposity of the BBC. It also gave Mackichan room to showcase an almost surgical talent for physical comedy that she would refine over the following decade.
And the three actresses refused to be treated as a simple gender quota. In 1999, Smack the Pony arrived as a bet on unfiltered female humor with no apologies. Alongside Sally Phillips and Fiona Allen, they showed that sketch comedy could be both surreal and raw. The show won an International Emmy and changed what was expected of a woman in prime time.
Before turning to television, she studied theater at the University of Manchester, where she crossed paths with a generation of performers who wanted more than conventional classical theater. But her path was not a straight line. For years, she alternated supporting roles in prestige series with voice-over work in commercials to pay the bills.
In 2013, she played Jane Plough in Toast of London. Her role as Steven Toast's eccentric agent allowed her to explore a much drier, more cynical comedic register. The series aired until 2015 and helped younger audiences rediscover her gift for rapid-fire dialogue.
It wasn't all laughs.
In 2017, she joined the cast of Two Doors Down as Cathy. She was the most hated and most loved character on the BBC Scotland series. Her outbursts and working-class-suburb snobbery provided the necessary counterpoint to the kindness of the other neighbors. In 2022, she decided to leave the project due to creative burnout.
Because Mackichan has always preferred risk to comfort. In 2023, she published her memoir, My Lady Parts. In its pages, she recounts the challenges of being a woman over fifty in an industry that values youth over experience. The book is a survival guide for actresses who refuse to become invisible.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2023, she made a surprise return to Two Doors Down for the Christmas special. The writers had to rewrite part of the plot to fit her comeback after a year away. That same year, she voiced the archangel Michael in the second season of Good Omens. Her participation in the Prime Video series wrapped up with a total of ten episodes filmed between 2019 and 2023.
In 2024, distribution figures for her work on streaming platforms reached a combined twelve million viewers outside the United Kingdom. The syndication deal for her classic comedies remains in effect in thirty countries. The production of her latest play at the National Theatre cost 1.2 million pounds.
