At fifteen, she convinced her parents to let her leave Kosovo and move back to London on her own. She moved into a shared flat with an older friend and started working as a waitress in Camden venues. She had no interest in the quick fame of TV talent shows; she preferred uploading cover versions of songs to YouTube while she served tables.
In 2014, she signed her first major deal with Warner Bros Records. Her contralto voice was deep and fit an industry looking for new textures. But the recording process was slow and grueling.
The plan was simple and risky.
In 2017 she released her self-titled album after several delays that nearly tested her fans' patience. The single New Rules transformed her financial trajectory thanks to a dance routine that went viral for its simplicity. That video racked up more than a billion views in record time for a European artist.
During the tour for her debut album, she endured constant harassment on social media over her lack of stage confidence. A meme about her dance moves became a shadow over her career. So she decided to lock herself away and rehearse for months before releasing her next project.
In 2020, she released Future Nostalgia just as the world was locking down due to the pandemic. It was a counterintuitive move. Releasing a dance album when nightclubs were closed seemed like commercial suicide, but audiences needed that escape.
So she decided to rehearse until she was exhausted.
International critics praised the production of hits like Levitating and Don’t Start Now. In 2021, she won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, and her status shifted from rising promise to industry reality. But Dua Lipa was already looking toward Hollywood film studios.
Her move into acting was no accident or last-minute whim. In 2023, she appeared in the movie Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, where she played Mermaid Barbie. She also co-wrote Dance the Night for the film's main soundtrack.
In 2024, she took a firmer step with Argylle, directed by Matthew Vaughn. She shared the screen with Henry Cavill and proved she could carry the weight of a big-budget spy blockbuster. Critics praised her physical presence and her ability to keep pace with pure action.
And the bet paid off once again.
In May 2024, she released her third studio album, Radical Optimism, with a sound inspired by British psychedelia. She wanted to move away from traditional pop and explore grittier synths and less predictable structures. The project debuted at No. 1 on the UK charts.
She ended her deal with the agency TaP Management in 2022 to take full control of her publishing rights through her company Radical22. In 2024, the valuation of her music catalog rose to over 50 million pounds, according to the financial records of her companies in London.
