Emma Mackey was born in Le Mans in 1996. The daughter of a French father and a British mother, she grew up in Sablé-sur-Sarthe before crossing the Channel to study literature at the University of Leeds. Her academic training in England was the step before she entered the London audition circuit.

She had no prior professional experience in the big film industry.

In 2019, she landed the role of Maeve Wiley in Sex Education. The Netflix series became a massive hit that put her on the radar of European casting directors. But she always knew her time on television was a transitional phase toward cinema with more dramatic weight.

And the gamble paid off.

Breaking away from the television mold

Her first major move into French cinema came in 2021 with the shoot of Eiffel. In this production she played Adrienne Bourgès and proved she could carry the weight of a period drama in her native language. French critics praised her ability to move away from the rebellious teen archetype that had made her famous.

In 2022, the project came along that defined her profile as a character actress. She played Emily Brontë in the biopic Emily, directed by Frances O'Connor. It was a demanding shoot on the Yorkshire moors that required absolute physical restraint.

Bilingualism was her master key.

That role earned her the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2023. The honor confirmed that her career no longer depended on streaming platforms' algorithms. She then began choosing scripts that prioritized the author's vision over the film's commercial budget.

New Records and International Shoots

In 2022, she appeared in Death on the Nile directed by Kenneth Branagh. It was her first foray into a major studio production with a top-tier ensemble cast. But her most talked-about appearance came in 2023 with Barbie, where Greta Gerwig took advantage of her physical resemblance to Margot Robbie for a meta-textual joke within the plot.

In 2024, she wrapped filming on Ella McCay in Rhode Island. In this film she works under the direction of James L. Brooks, sharing scenes with Jamie Lee Curtis and Woody Harrelson. The project centers on the life of a young politician trying to balance her career with her family life.

In 2025, her schedule included the production of The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde. It is the new feature film from M. Night Shyamalan, shot entirely on location in the United Kingdom. The production has an estimated budget of $20 million.
