Simone Ashley

The black sheep of Surrey

Simone Ashwini Pillai grew up in a home where classical music and engineering were the cornerstones of life. Her parents, of Tamil Indian origin, expected the academic world to be their daughter's natural refuge. But she preferred the piano and opera over traditional textbooks.

At sixteen, she decided her future was in London. She studied at the Arts Educational Schools, where she realized that her look didn't fit the rigid molds of classic British theater. That sense of not belonging became her main driving force.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2017, she landed a small role in the third season of Broadchurch. It was a brief appearance, but enough for casting directors to take note of her name. Soon after, she joined Pokémon Detective Pikachu in 2019 (a massive shoot where she had only a couple of lines).

The Netflix filter and the skin of Kate Sharma

Her real breakthrough came with Sex Education in 2019. She played Olivia Hanan for three seasons and brought a magnetic coldness to a character that could have been a typical high school archetype. It was the perfect rehearsal for what came next.

In 2021, Shondaland producers were looking for the lead of the second season of Bridgerton. They wanted someone who could hold their gaze with Jonathan Bailey without blinking. Ashley sent in an audition tape and landed the role of Kate Sharma in less than a week of talks.

Filming 2022 required her to learn to ride horseback in the sidesaddle style. The chemistry with her co-star was the heart of a season that racked up 627 million viewing hours in its first twenty-eight days on the platform.

But she didn't want to be just a pretty face in a period drama.

Total Control and Production Offices

In 2023, she made a brief appearance in the live-action version of The Little Mermaid. It was a strategic move to link her image to Disney while she developed more personal projects under her own creative control. Ashley knows that power in the industry lies in owning the stories.

During 2024, she founded her own production company, Lownly. The company aims to develop projects that break free from the ethnic labels that often limit non-white actors in the United Kingdom. Its first major move was the thriller This Tempting Madness, filmed that same year.

In 2025, the romantic comedy Picture This is set to premiere on Prime Video. She plays a woman who searches for love after a prediction at a singles party. The film was shot entirely on location in London and its surroundings.

Simone Ashley signed an advertising contract with L’Oréal Paris at the end of 2023 for a sum that the trade press estimated at several million euros.
