Jonathan Bailey was born in 1988 in the small town of Wallingford, in Oxfordshire. He does not come from a line of actors or a family connected to the arts. His father was a manager at a yogurt factory and his mother worked at a medical office. At age five he saw a performance of Oliver! and decided that his place was on stage.
He achieved it just two years later.
In 1995 he made his West End debut in London, playing Gavroche in the production of Les Misérables. That childhood experience gave him iron discipline. But the road to global recognition was not a straight line. For more than a decade he alternated supporting roles in sitcoms with demanding work at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
In 2011 he played a young Leonardo da Vinci in the series Leonardo. That project required him to learn fencing and handle period tools. But it was in 2013 that British audiences began to recognize his face on a massive scale. In Broadchurch he brought to life Olly Stevens, a local journalist with an ambition that bordered on reckless.
Bailey never abandoned the stage despite his television appearances. In 2018 he took part in the new production of Stephen Sondheim's musical Company. In this staging, the character of Jamie, who was originally a woman, became a gay man. He won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor for this role in 2019.
And the effort paid off.
His performance of the song Not Getting Married Today went viral in specialist circles for its speed and technical precision. But Bailey was looking for something more than applause from the theater niche. He wanted projects that would test his ability to carry a big-budget production. So he agreed to enter the world of Shonda Rhimes.
In 2020 the first season of Bridgerton premiered on Netflix. His role as Anthony Bridgerton required a long-term contract and unprecedented media exposure. The second season of the series, released in 2022 and centered on his character, earned 627 million hours viewed in its first 28 days on the platform.
The phenomenon was inevitable.
Unlike other actors who hide their private lives so as not to break the illusion of the straight leading man, Bailey spoke openly about being gay from the start of his rise. In 2023 he starred alongside Matt Bomer in the miniseries Fellow Travelers. It is a political drama about a secret romance during the McCarthy era in the United States.
To shoot this project he had to cross the Atlantic constantly. He spent his days in Toronto filming dramatic scenes and flew to London on weekends to meet his commitments on the set of Bridgerton. But exhaustion did not slow his schedule. In 2024 he plays Fiyero in the film adaptation of the musical Wicked.
In 2025 he will lead the cast of the next installment of the Jurassic World franchise under director Gareth Edwards. Filming of this blockbuster began at Sky Studios Elstree in June 2024 with an estimated budget of 200 million dollars.
