In 1994, she attended the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral wearing a Versace design that changed her career. That black dress held together with gold safety pins overshadowed the film itself and put Elizabeth Hurley at the center of international attention. Until then, she was a British actress with modest roles in productions such as Aria from 1987 or the Spanish film Remando al viento, shot in 1988.
Nadie esperaba aquel impacto mediático.
But her career didn't come out of nowhere. She grew up in Basingstoke and went through a punk phase as a teenager before studying dance and theater. That rebellious spirit helped her navigate an industry that often tried to reduce her to her looks. In 1992, she appeared in Passenger 57 alongside Wesley Snipes (a pure action project), but her real business was far from Hollywood scripts.
Because Hurley understood early on that her image was a financial asset.
She signed an exclusive contract with Estée Lauder in 1995 before starring in any major box office hit. That endorsement deal became one of the longest-running in cosmetics history. The company sought a very specific British elegance, and she maintained that status for decades.
She founded the production company Simian Films in 1996 with Hugh Grant. She didn't want to be just an employee of the major studios, so she decided to take charge of financing and logistics. She produced Below the Line in 1996 (a medical thriller with Gene Hackman) and later the comedy Mickey Blue Eyes in 1999.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2000, she played the Devil in Bedazzled. Critics were relentless toward the film, but its worldwide box office topped $90 million. That role showcased her more commercial and sophisticated side. Shortly after, she chose to step back from demanding shoots to focus on raising her son and on her own swimwear line, launched in 2005.
In 2011, she returned to acting with a recurring role on Gossip Girl. She played Diana Payne, an unscrupulous media executive, and proved that her acting style fit perfectly with modern television. So in 2015, she took on the lead role in The Royals, playing Queen Helena across four full seasons.
The series was filmed in London and satirized the British monarchy with a sharp tone.
In 2024, she starred in the erotic thriller Strictly Confidential. The film has an important behind-the-scenes twist: it was written and directed by her son, Damian Hurley. It was shot in the Turks and Caicos Islands in December as an independent production.
The film was released directly to digital platforms and select markets.
