In 1994, Hugh Grant earned exactly 100,000 pounds for starring in Four Weddings and a Funeral. He was 33 years old and had spent a whole decade stuck in period academic adaptations for British television. At the time, he was considering giving up acting to devote himself to writing or trying his luck in advertising.
Richard Curtis's script blew his plans apart. The film grossed more than $240 million worldwide and set a highly profitable comedic archetype. That character stumbled over his words, ruffled his hair with calculated clumsiness and apologized for existing in front of unattainable women.
And the charm trap worked all too well.
In the years that followed, Los Angeles executives assumed Grant was exactly that charming, stuttering dandy. In 1987 he had already won the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival for the drama Maurice, but Hollywood wasn't interested in subtle drama. Box office ruled.
In June 1995, Los Angeles police arrested him along with Divine Brown in a car parked near Sunset Boulevard. Just two weeks remained before the premiere of his first major American production, Nine Months. Any publicist would have hidden their client in a private clinic.
Grant chose to sit down opposite Jay Leno on national television. He admitted without hedging that he had done something unforgivable and did not look for cheap excuses. That candor disarmed the scandal within days.
So he returned to the big screen with more clout in the industry than before his arrest. In 1999 he shared the bill with Julia Roberts in Notting Hill, and in 2001 he played Daniel Cleaver in Bridget Jones's Diary. In this latter production, he agreed to show his first public shadow by playing a charming scoundrel in an expensive sweater.
But the formula began to suffocate him. During the filming of Music and Lyrics in 2007, he suffered panic attacks and needed anti-anxiety medication to face the camera. The commercial flop of Did You Hear About the Morgans? in 2009 finally convinced him he had to stop.
In 2011, Grant stepped away from film to lead the Hacked Off campaign against the illegal phone hacking of Rupert Murdoch's media empire. In his court appearances, he revealed his true public voice. He was biting, cerebral and held absolute contempt for the tabloid press.
That media storm transformed how directors saw him. Roles as the clumsy leading man vanished.
He stopped trying to come across as charming to the camera.
In 2012, the Wachowski sisters gave him six different roles in the ambitious Cloud Atlas, where he played a cannibalistic leader. In 2016 he joined Meryl Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins, bringing to life a mediocre British aristocrat. That performance earned him a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
In 2017 he played the villain Phoenix Buchanan in Paddington 2. Grant mercilessly skewered the vices of the acting profession, dressing as a nun and reciting Shakespeare while dancing in a prison cell.
British television capitalized on that bitter tone. In 2018 he starred in the miniseries A Very English Scandal under the direction of Stephen Frears, playing the liberal politician Jeremy Thorpe. In 2020 he shared the cast with Nicole Kidman in the HBO thriller The Undoing, playing a pediatric oncologist with two faces who drew millions of viewers.
In 2023, Grant took on two studio projects far removed from any pleasing formula. He played a corrupt governor in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and spent weeks in motion capture to bring the Oompa Loompa to life in Wonka.
In 2024, the independent studio A24 entrusted him with the lead role in the horror film Heretic, directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Grant stepped into the shoes of Mr. Reed, a man who traps two Mormon missionaries in order to dismantle their faith through a claustrophobic philosophical debate.
Horror suited him like a tailored suit.
In 2025, he reunited with Renée Zellweger in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy to reprise the role of Daniel Cleaver in a handful of brief scenes. It was a calculated appearance that British critics highlighted above the film's overall tone.
For the production of Heretic in Vancouver, the crew managed a ten-million-dollar budget and completed filming in thirty-three days inside a house built entirely on a soundstage.

Things you probably didn't know about Hugh Grant
In the last couple of weeks I have seen the ads for the Wonder Bra. Is that really a problem in this country? Men not paying enough attention to women’s breasts?
Margaret Thatcher used to say: "I can't win an election and survive politically without bending over to the power of the press." Well, look what's happening now: the "leave" Brexit campaign has been a media maniac affair. Media is an occult power in our so-called civilized, enlightened society.
Politics is stressful, it's scary, tiresome. Acting is like a breath of fresh air. They're both fictional kind of creativity: politicians are bad actors.
