Fay Ripley never set out to be the friendly face of British television. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and spent her early professional years working the stage before the camera finally fixed its attention on her.
Then the script for Cold Feet arrived.
The year was 1997 when she first stepped into the shoes of Jenny Gifford. What started as a pilot episode for the ITV network ended up running for five initial seasons. Audiences connected with her character because she was not perfect and steered clear of the female stereotypes of the era.
Jenny was a character many viewers could relate to (especially for her brutal honesty about motherhood and marriage). But Ripley chose to step away from the show in 2001 to explore other kinds of roles and keep the industry from consuming her in a single part.
Many actors fear being typecast, and she was no exception. After leaving the hit series, she took part in The Stretford Wives in 2002. It was a dark BBC drama in which she played a woman dealing with infidelity and crime in a suburban setting.
And the gamble paid off.
The British industry is small, and Ripley learned early that diversifying was the only way to survive the passage of time. She alternated supporting roles in comedies such as Reggie Perrin in 2009 with voice work for advertising. Her voice has that recognizable grain that supermarket brands love and exploit.
In 2006, she published her first cookbook, Fay’s Family Food. It was not the typical move of a celebrity chasing extra income. She sold more than 100,000 copies in the first few months alone, and that gave her a financial independence few actors of her generation manage to keep.
The return of Cold Feet in 2016 posed a logistical and emotional challenge for the entire original cast. Ripley went on to play Jenny Gifford for four more seasons until the series wrapped up in 2020. Nearly nine million viewers followed the ending of her storyline about breast cancer in the United Kingdom.
But she did not get stuck in nostalgia for the nineties. In 2021, she starred in the thriller The Drowning for Channel 5. She played a mother obsessed with the idea that her son, who had vanished years earlier, was still alive after seeing him at a bus stop.
It was a grueling, physically demanding shoot.
Critics praised her ability to hold long, emotionally charged shots without saying a single word. As a result, offers for suspense dramas multiplied beyond her usual comfort zone. In 2023, she joined the cast of the Australian series Safe Home, where she tackled domestic violence from an institutional perspective.
Her career is measured by consistency rather than big red carpet premieres in Hollywood. Ripley lives in London with her husband (also actor Daniel Lapaine) and their two children. In 2024, recording for her new projects focused on the British streaming market for global platforms.
The production of her most recent television project had a budget of £4.2 million.
