Colin McFarlane stands almost six foot three and has a voice that seems to come straight out of a coal mine. In 1985 he made his British TV debut with a minor role in The Saturday Starship, and from that moment he understood that his physique would shape his roles. He didn't mind too much.
In the late 1980s he honed his craft in classical theater while the industry tried to typecast him in authority roles. But his range allowed for nuances that other actors of his stature could not project. In 1994 he appeared in the series The Life and Times of Henry Pratt and showed that he could handle slice-of-life drama with the same skill as suspense.
And then the call from Christopher Nolan came.
In 2005 he played Commissioner Gillian B. Loeb in Batman Begins. The shoot was intense, and McFarlane had to build a character who could hold his own against Christian Bale under constant artificial rain. He reprised the role in 2008 for The Dark Knight, and his exit from the franchise was one of the film's driest moments.
Working with Nolan gave him an international profile he had until then only in the United Kingdom.
Many viewers recognize his face from Hollywood blockbusters, but millions of Brits know his voice from a glass cube. Since 2009, he has provided the voiceover for the game show The Cube. His authoritative, deep tone became so recognizable that the production company decided to keep it even when the format was exported to other territories.
Voice work was not a refuge but an extension of his acting career. In 2011 he joined the world of Thomas & Friends, bringing characters like Beresford to life. It is a technical, meticulous job that demands eight-hour recording sessions without losing the power of his vocal cords.
Because voice work pays the bills while you wait for the right script.
In 2015 he joined the cast of Doctor Who, playing Moran in two episodes that British critics praised for their oppressive atmosphere. It wasn't the first time he had crossed paths with science fiction, but here the script allowed him a restraint in his performance that he was rarely allowed to unleash in mainstream action films.
McFarlane has never stopped working on big-budget projects. In 2018 he shot The Commuter alongside Liam Neeson under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra. The shoot at Pinewood Studios was a display of technical precision in which the actor once again embodied the authority figure that audiences already associate with his physical presence.
But his activity did not slow down as he entered the 2020s.
In 2024 he appeared in The Beekeeper and the action film Lift for streaming platforms. These supporting roles act as an anchor of credibility in high-voltage plots. In 2025 he joined the cast of The Thursday Murder Club, the adaptation of Richard Osman's novel produced by Steven Spielberg.
The contract for this latest production included a strict confidentiality clause regarding the filming locations in the southern counties of England.
