Florencia Lozano was born in Princeton, but her DNA carries the spirit of Argentina. She studied at Brown University and later attended the Tisch School of the Arts to refine a technique that has always seemed more instinctive than academic.
In 1997 she joined the cast of One Life to Live, playing Tea Delgado. That role gave her massive visibility on American television for more than a decade. But daytime drama is a golden trap that can consume any actor's identity if they aren't careful.
Lozano managed to get in and out of that cycle of frantic filming until 2013.
She survived being typecast.
She juggled film and TV work with New York stage productions at the LAByrinth company. There she realized her place was in complex characters and in writing her own material. Writing for theater lets her control the narrative that the industry sometimes denies her because of her Latino background.
Her move into productions with greater dramatic weight wasn't automatic. In 2010 she premiered her play Underneathmybed, which earned praise for its ability to dissect family legacy and exile. Her work as a playwright is what grounds her rigor when she takes supporting roles in major productions.
In 2016, she joined Narcos. She played Claudia Messina in the second season of the Netflix series. Her portrayal of a DEA agent brought a dry sobriety that contrasted with the gunfire and excess of the main plot.
And the gamble paid off.
She later appeared in The Blacklist and The Enemy Within in 2019. In these projects she often plays authority figures or women with a heavy past who don't need many words to command the screen. As a result, her name became a regular fixture in the casts of shows filmed on the East Coast.
In 2022 she appeared in the miniseries Keep Breathing, playing the mother of the lead character. It's a brief but essential role for understanding the central trauma of survival in the forest. She also maintained a steady presence in the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit universe across several different seasons.
Sometimes prestige is built on the margins.
She isn't chasing the spotlight on the red carpets of Los Angeles. She prefers the atmosphere of New York's independent theater scene and collaborating with directors who avoid the usual Hispanic stereotypes. In 2024 she still lives in Manhattan and remains involved in experimental playwriting.
Her contract for cable television productions follows the SAG-AFTRA pay scales, with no major differences from other character actors. On set, she is known for arriving with her lines memorized and not requesting changes to the wardrobe assigned by production.
