Funda Eryiğit was born in Zwolle, Netherlands, in 1984. She didn't seek out the camera by instinct. She studied International Relations at Istanbul University before deciding on the State Conservatory.
That earlier political training gave her a mental structure she still applies when reading scripts. Because Eryiğit doesn't act on pure instinct. She analyzes the social context of her characters before stepping onto the set.
In 2008, she made her debut on the series Canım Ailem. That first job in Turkish television helped her understand the frantic pace of the local industry. But her real education happened on the theater stage.
And she did it without making a fuss.
She won Best Actress at the Afife Jale Theater Awards in 2013 for her role in Sessizlik. It was a dry, straightforward recognition. That medieval England-set stage production proved she could carry the weight of a national production without relying on technical tricks.
For years, she played supporting roles that stole the spotlight from the leading names. In 2014, she joined the cast of Karadayı to play Belgin Günay. It was a icy performance that avoided the excesses of traditional Turkish melodrama.
The Turkish industry doesn't always know what to do with her.
In 2016, she took part in Poyraz Karayel. Her professional choices began to move away from the most commercial circuits in search of stories with greater psychological weight. She avoided empty promotional interviews and focused on pure acting craft.
But the real jump in scale came in 2020 with the premiere of Ethos on Netflix. Her performance as Ruhiye was an exercise in absolute restraint. She conveyed deep trauma with almost no dialogue, relying solely on a lost gaze that connected with international audiences.
That project marked her professional and personal partnership with director Berkun Oya. European critics began to take notice of her ability to disappear into broken characters.
In 2022, she starred in Cici. In this film, she played a mother at two different stages of her life. The technical challenge was complex because she had to maintain emotional consistency despite the makeup and the fictional passage of time.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2023, she filmed Boğa Boğa (known internationally as Chokehold). In this thriller, she shared the screen with Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ. The production explored social suffocation in a small coastal town. Eryiğit used a dry, distant tone that provided the perfect counterpoint to the tension of the plot.
In 2024, she premiered Kül. In this film, she plays Gökçe, a woman who gets lost within the narrative of an unpublished novel. The film reached number one on the viewing charts in several European countries during its first week.
In May 2023, she gave birth to her first child after finishing her outstanding contractual commitments. Her contract for the film Kül included specific clauses on sound post-production at the Istanbul studios.
