Gao Hanyu didn't start out in front of a film camera. In 2008, he was a member of HIT-5, a pop group trying to carve out a place in a market saturated by Korean influence. He was the lead rapper and the dancer who drew all the attention in low-budget music videos. But the world of idol music is ephemeral by definition, and internal competition eventually wore the project down.
And the group disbanded without making much noise.
That period of youth taught him that physical discipline was his best working tool. Many of his generation's peers vanished from the media landscape after their record contracts ended. Gao decided his path led through the film studios of Hengdian and began auditioning for supporting roles in television.
Before filming, he reads the script until he has memorized his co-stars' lines.
His first steps in acting were modest and nearly invisible to specialized critics. In 2017, he appeared in Fighter of the Destiny, playing Xuanyuan Po. He wasn't the lead of the story, but his physical presence stood out amid the period costumes and digital effects. That shoot required weeks of training with swords and wire rigs for the fight scenes.
In 2018, Legend of Fuyao came out, and his name began to make real waves in the offices of Beijing's major production companies. He played Jiang Feng with a seriousness that contrasted with his past as a teen pop singer. That's because Gao Hanyu has a knack for tightening his expression until it looks like a block of granite in front of the lens.
But it was in 2019 with The King's Avatar that young audiences finally rescued him from obscurity. His role as Yu Wenzhou in this drama about e-sports worked because he perfectly understood the visual language of video games. The series racked up **one billion views** in its first weeks of streaming on digital platforms.
The Chinese entertainment industry is often merciless as time goes by.
Once actors reach thirty, many lose the favor of brands and casting directors. Gao Hanyu broke that pattern in 2021 by joining the reality show Call Me By Fire. There, he proved he still had the agility of his HIT-5 days and regained a popularity that seemed to have stalled in TV executives' offices.
That same year, he premiered The Lion's Secret alongside Zhu Yawen. The production was complicated, and filming dragged on longer than planned due to logistical problems at the outdoor locations. But the chemistry between the actors saved the final result in editing. By 2020, he had already shown his talent for romantic comedy in Love is Sweet, proving he could handle fast-paced dialogue without losing rhythm.
His schedule filled up with period projects with multimillion-dollar budgets. In 2024, he took part in The Legend of Shen Li, one of the biggest bets of the tech giant Tencent for the Asian market. The budget for this series exceeded **300 million yuan** in direct production and post-production costs.
Filming the action scenes for Hard to Find during 2024 required a team of six stunt doubles for the high-risk mountain sequences.
