Simon Helberg grew up in Los Angeles surrounded by scripts and film sets. His father was an actor and his mother a casting director, but he didn't take the fast track into television studios. As a teenager he became obsessed with jazz piano and karate before deciding that acting would be his true calling.
He was an efficient supporting player.
In 2002 he made a brief appearance in Van Wilder and soon after in Old School. They were tiny roles where he barely had a couple of lines, but his talent for handling awkward silence was already on display. He formed a comedy duo with Derek Waters and took part in sketch shows that almost nobody remembers today outside California's cult circles.
In 2007, he signed on for a CBS pilot about four brilliant but socially awkward scientists. Nobody imagined that The Big Bang Theory would run for twelve seasons. Helberg was paid 45,000 dollars per episode at the start of the project.
By the end of the series in 2019, his salary exceeded a million dollars per episode.
But money wasn't all he was after. Over those twelve years, Helberg often felt the weight of being typecast as the comic relief in skinny jeans. So in 2014 he decided to direct and star in his own film, titled We'll Never Have Paris. It was a personal project based on his own failed marriage proposal, shot on an independent budget.
And the gamble paid off.
His real breakout away from his television image came in 2021. Director Leos Carax called him to take part in Annette alongside Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. Helberg plays an orchestra conductor, and to land the role he had to obtain French citizenship to meet European production quotas.
He had to play the piano live during filming. There were no editing tricks or hand doubles in the musical scenes of that film, because his technical training was superior to that of any stand-in. In 2022 he worked under Mayim Bialik in the family drama As They Made Us, playing a son estranged from his family.
It's a dry, restrained role.
In 2023 he appeared in Rian Johnson's series Poker Face, playing an FBI agent in the episode titled Time of the Monkey. Helberg still lives in Los Angeles and keeps a low profile away from the tabloids, choosing projects that move away from traditional sitcoms. Production on his next independent project is scheduled to begin in spring 2025.
