Trivia about Dug Days

Ed Asner died on August 29, three days before the series premiered, and this is his first posthumous performance to be released. The series is dedicated to his memory.

For the episode "Science," unused archival recordings of Jordan Nagai, who voiced Russell, were used, even though the actor had already retired when development of the series began.

The series was animated remotely due to the pandemic, with about 100 animators, fewer than usual for a Pixar production. All episodes were produced at the same time.

Michael Giacchino, the composer of Up, was asked to return for the series but turned down the job due to scheduling conflicts and recommended Andrea Datzman, who in turn called Curtis Green.

The fifth episode, "Science," was nominated for the Annie Award for Best Animated Television Production for Children at the 49th Annie Awards.

Bob Peterson said the idea of making Dug the star of a series of shorts came about after working on "Forky Asks a Question," since Pixar had not yet made a series in that format.

To recreate the look of the characters from "Up," Pixar had to redo the modeling, rigging and textures, as well as rebuild part of the performance and make sure Carl kept his walk.

The five pieces were produced simultaneously, and the whole project took about eleven months to complete more than forty minutes of animation.
