Gustav Lindh

Gustav Lindh entered the Malmö Academy of Theatre in 2014 at nineteen. He wasn't after quick fame but a technique that would let him hold a close-up without blinking. In 2016 he made his big-screen debut with The Circle, but it was his meeting with director May el-Toukhy that blew his anonymity wide open.

The Risk of Seducing the Stepmother

He played Mads in Queen of Hearts in 2019. That Danish film demanded a physical and moral fragility that few actors his age would have accepted. International critics noticed his icy gaze and his ability to be vulnerable and threatening at the same time.

And the risk was worth it.

He won the Bodil Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Berlinale Shooting Stars award in 2021. But Lindh avoided being typecast in Nordic erotic drama. He preferred to move into television with Love me and take part in the dark comedy Riders of Justice in 2020 alongside Mads Mikkelsen. On that shoot he learned that dry humor demands as much precision as tears.

Mud and Clay in Period Cinema

Robert Eggers recruited him in 2022 for The Northman to play Thorir the Proud. The ninety-million-dollar budget did not change how he approached the character, which he played from silence. Shooting in the desolate landscapes of Northern Ireland under constant rain toughened his working method.

Lindh prefers physical discomfort when the script calls for it. During 2023, he starred in The Bastard (Bastarden) under the direction of Nikolaj Arcel. In this story about the conquest of the Danish moors, he once again shared the screen with Mikkelsen. His role demanded absolute restraint to match the harshness of the landscape filmed in 2023.

In 2024 he presented The Girl with the Needle at the Cannes Film Festival.

Giving Up Color

Shot in black and white, this film places Lindh in a shadowy postwar Copenhagen. The Swedish actor chooses projects based on the director's aesthetic vision rather than the paycheck. His participation in Burn All My Letters at 2022 already hinted at his interest in psychological period dramas.

To prepare for The Entertainer in 2024, he studied the rhythms of British television. Lindh doesn't believe in inspiration but in hours of prior rehearsal. The Malmö Academy of Theatre remains his mental reference point when he faces a new script in English or Danish.

By the end of 2024, his profile listed more than twenty credits across film and television. His contract for the production of The Girl with the Needle included specific clauses on the length of location shoot days.
