Hanna Alström didn't wait for anyone's permission to become an actress. At just five years old, she was already on stage at Unga Teatern in Stockholm alongside her sister Sara. That early start wasn't a childish whim but a firm decision that led her to shoot her first film in 1989 under the direction of Staffan Götestam.
In 2003, she entered the Swedish National Academy of Dramatic Arts. She spent four years studying the classics and refining a technique that has always favored restraint over histrionics. That's because Alström belongs to that Nordic school where silence says much more than a scream into the camera.
And the gamble paid off.
But recognition beyond Sweden's borders took a while to arrive. For a decade, she worked through roles in local TV series and short films that barely left the Scandinavian circuit. In 1999, she married actor Gustaf Skarsgård, but the marriage ended in divorce in 2005, just as their professional paths were beginning to diverge.
The whole world got to know her face in 2014. Her role as Princess Tilde in Kingsman: The Secret Service was an anomaly in her career, given the rowdy tone of Matthew Vaughn's film. In 2017, she reprised the character in the sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle, where her presence gained weight within the action plot.
But her real interest has always been in projects with a political or social charge. In 2016, she took part in Sami Blood, a raw story about the discrimination against the Sami people in Sweden in the 1930s. It was a supporting role, but a fundamental one for understanding her commitment to stories that make the average viewer uncomfortable.
In 2019, she took on one of her biggest acting challenges with El rascacielos de cristal. In this Czech production, she brought to life Liesel Landauer, a woman who goes through decades of historical change in Central Europe. The film demanded absolute mastery of the character's physical and emotional evolution over the years.
It was her most demanding role up to that point.
European television has known how to make the most of her talent for playing analytical characters. In 2021, she starred in Agatha Christies Hjerson, playing a TV producer who becomes an amateur detective. The show's tone allowed Alström to play with dry comedy and suspense without falling into the clichés of the crime genre.
In 2022, she had a brief but significant appearance in season five of The Crown. She played Heini Wathén, the wife of tycoon Mohamed Al-Fayed, in an episode that explored the family's social rise in London. Her ability to blend into settings of luxury and power has made her a recurring choice for international casting directors.
In 2023, she shot The Abyss, a disaster film set in the Kiruna mine. The shoot was a test of physical endurance due to the action scenes in confined spaces and the dramatic weight of a mother trying to save her family. The production became a hit on digital platforms during 2024.
Hanna Alström still lives in Stockholm. In 2024, her fee per episode for international productions was around 45,000 euros.
