Haruna Kawaguchi arrived on the set of the historical drama Kirin ga Kuru in 2020 with only a few days to prepare for a role that was not hers. She replaced a veteran actress in the middle of a media scandal and did it without missing a beat. She had to reshoot ten episodes in record time so that public broadcaster NHK could premiere on schedule.
That decision saved the NHK production.
Kawaguchi was born in the Goto Islands in 1995, and her entry into the industry was anything but glamorous. She won a contest held by the magazine Nicola in 2007, but she still lived in her hometown, which meant traveling for hours by boat and train for every photo shoot. In 2009, she made her TV debut in Tokyo Dogs, a police drama in which she played the lead's younger sister.
Kawaguchi played Kicho and earned unanimous critical acclaim for her composure in an environment of extreme pressure. That moment changed how the public saw her. She stopped being the pretty face of magazine covers and became an actress capable of carrying the weight of a major national production.
And the gamble paid off.
Before that success, she had already starred in the adaptation of Ouran High School Host Club in 2011. In that project, she played a female student who pretends to be a boy, a role that moved her away from the delicate model image. But her real commercial impact would come years later through advertising and prime-time series.
In 2014, she headed the cast of Say “I love you”, a film that earned more than 1 billion yen at the Japanese box office. But film was not her only field. Her face began appearing in every Tokyo subway station as the image of global brands.
In Japan, she's known as the queen of commercials.
In 2022, she starred in Silent, a drama about hearing loss that broke streaming records on digital platforms. The series garnered millions of weekly views and revived massive interest in classic romantic dramas. The naturalness with which she handled sign language on screen won over even the most skeptical viewers.
Her ability to sell products is so strong that in 2023 she topped the list of the country's celebrities with the most endorsement deals. Cosmetics, beverage and tech brands trust her image because she projects a warmth that audiences value above the cold sophistication of other stars.
In 2024, she took the lead role in 9Border, a story centered on three sisters facing life crises as they turn ages ending in nine. The script explores social pressure on women in their thirties, a theme Kawaguchi handles with a restrained performance she has refined over fifteen years in the business.
Not everything in her career has been wins. In 2013, she starred in Husband's Lover, a series that drew unusually low ratings and that the press used to question her ability to draw an audience. That professional slump forced her to diversify her career and take supporting roles with greater dramatic weight before becoming the first choice of casting directors once again.
Her YouTube channel, launched in 2020, has more than 1.5 million subscribers who are interested in her life away from the spotlight. In her videos, she is seen eating at street stalls or traveling to her home island with no makeup or fuss. This transparency strategy has shielded her career from the wear and tear that typically affects Japanese idols.
Her exclusive contract with the Ken-On agency ensures that her schedule is booked two years in advance.
