Jun Shison spent six days in intensive care in March 2021. Acute myocarditis put on hold a career that, until then, seemed unstoppable. That forced break made him rethink his work pace in an industry that rarely allows time off.
Before that medical scare, the actor had already come through the Super Sentai franchise. In 2014 he took on the role of Right in Ressha Sentai ToQger. It's the usual path for young talent in Japan. But Shison didn't want to be stuck in the young hero role forever.
He sought out projects that would challenge his own idol image.
In 2018, he took on the challenge of playing Kuranosuke Koibuchi in the adaptation of Kuragehime. For this role as a young man who dresses as a woman, he had to lose weight and sit through endless makeup sessions. He wasn't looking for a caricature. He wanted to understand the psychology of a character who uses style as a shield against a suffocating political family.
Delivered a physical performance that silenced the harshest critics of the original manga.
And the gamble paid off.
The streaming industry changed the rules of the game for him. In December 2023, Netflix premiered the live-action version of YuYu Hakusho, in which Shison played Kurama. The challenge was technical and visual. Wearing red hair and handling rose whips in a digital effects environment requires a precision that few actors of his generation can manage.
In 2024 he appeared in the film April Come She Will alongside Takeru Satoh. Here he set fantasy aside to focus on a much more restrained romantic drama. Shison prefers to alternate big productions with stories where silence says more than special effects.
Nobody expected that level of commitment.
At the end of 2023, he took an important step in his professional structure. He ended his exclusive contract with the Watanabe Entertainment agency to work more independently (while keeping certain management ties). This decision gives him full control over his shooting schedule and his health.
In 2025 his schedule focused on mid-level projects that prioritize script quality over mass box office appeal. He still lives in Tokyo and keeps a low profile on social media. He avoids unnecessary appearances on variety shows.
His advertising contract with a European luxury brand was renewed in January 2026. The Japanese business press estimated the deal at fifty million yen a year. Filming for his next TV drama began in Kanagawa Prefecture during the second week of May 2026.
