Moka Kamishiraishi won the Toho Cinderella competition in 2011 at just ten years old. She beat more than forty thousand hopefuls in Japan's most important talent contest. That victory earned her an immediate contract with the Toho Entertainment agency and the start of mandatory professional training. She soon appeared in the pages of Pichi Lemon magazine as an exclusive model.
And the gamble paid off.
Despite her early exposure, her family maintained a strict structure in Kagoshima Prefecture. Her older sister Mone also worked in the industry. The two shared the pressure of auditions while continuing their high school studies. In 2012, she appeared in her first television series, Bunshin, playing a younger version of the lead character.
In 2015, she made her film debut in Brain Fluid Explosion Girl. The production was an adaptation of a popular Vocaloid song and aimed to attract Japanese teenage audiences. Filming lasted just three weeks on location in Tokyo. Her base salary at the time was standard for a young actress with no leading-role experience.
In 2018, she lent her voice to the lead character of the animated film Mirai, directed by Mamoru Hosoda. The film earned an Academy Award nomination and brought international recognition to an actress who was just eighteen years old. Voicing a young boy required a vocal range that few directors believed she had. Her natural voice is much deeper and more relaxed than the standard expected of Japanese idols.
She also decided to explore her musical side under the stage name adieu. She didn't want her real name to influence how people received her songs. In 2017, she recorded the main theme for the film Narratage completely anonymously. It took the public two years to discover who was behind the melancholic voice heard over the credits.
It was a risky move.
In 2019, she released her first mini album, adieu 1, under Sony Music. Her lyrics often focus on introspection and urban loneliness. Japanese music critics praised her ability to convey fragility without slipping into cheap sentimentality. However, she always prioritized filming over large concert tours.
The role that changed how producers saw her was Reina Kageyama in 3A10: From Now On, You Are Hostages in 2019. She played an Olympic swimmer whose suicide sets off the entire suspense plot. It was a ratings hit on NTV. Her cool, restrained performance contrasted with the explosive energy of other cast members such as Masaki Suda.
In 2022, she took on the challenge of joining NHK's public-broadcast historical drama The 13 Lords of the Shogun. Shoots for productions like this usually last a full year and demand exhausting physical commitment. She played the daughter of a samurai in a story of political betrayal and bloodshed. She earned an average of 1.1 million yen per episode, according to actors' union estimates at the time.
In 2024, she voiced the lead character in the film Kimi no Iro under the direction of Naoko Yamada. The project centered on synesthesia and the formation of a youth music band. The production had an animation budget above average to ensure the quality of the musical sequences recorded in the studio.
Filming on her next TV project in 2025 was delayed three weeks due to budget problems during preproduction.
