Before he donned Shotaro Hidari's leather jacket, he had to work in cafés and clothing stores in Tokyo.

Renn Kiriyama didn't come up through an agency that hands out success on a silver platter (though his image may suggest otherwise). He spent years cycling through failed auditions while his savings ran out in a city that shows no mercy to those without income.

Rejection was her daily routine.

In 2009, he landed the lead role in Kamen Rider W after beating out more than two thousand applicants in a casting process. This was when his face started plastering subway stations. But the fame of special-effects series tends to be fleeting, and many actors disappear once the suit is put away in storage.

The contract that saved the rent

Kiriyama quickly understood that fan frenzy was a double-edged sword. He decided he didn't want to be just a pretty face on a trading card. During the filming of Kamen Rider W, he became obsessed with the technical details of acting and with building a character with real nuance.

In 2011, he made the leap to prime-time productions with Hanazakari no Kimitachi e. He played Minami Nanba, and that role let him connect with an audience that didn't watch superhero fiction. It was a necessary transition to avoid the typecasting that derails so many careers in the Japanese industry.

And the gamble paid off.

That same year he starred in Switch Girl!! alongside Mariya Nishiuchi. The series became a hit export in France and other European markets. But Kiriyama kept his feet on the ground, knowing that television is a business of trends that change every quarter.

The Risks of Interpretive Maturity

As he grew older, he sought out projects where his physical appearance was secondary. In 2017, he took the lead role in Code Name: Mirage. It was a dark action production with minimalist aesthetics that demanded absolute physical control. He performed most of his stunt scenes without doubles to lend greater credibility to the combat sequences.

In 2018 he took part in Love and Fortune (Koi no Tsuki). It was a risky project because of its themes of infidelity and the social pressures within romantic relationships. Kiriyama played a complex character that was a total departure from his beginnings as a teen idol.

Nobody expected that coolness.

His ability to work across different genres allowed him to stay active in an industry that often sidelines actors once they reach their thirties. In 2021, he joined the cast of Colorful Love (Karafuru Rabiuburu: Gensen no Wakuwaku). There, he explored a far more androgynous and modern look that challenged traditional notions of masculinity in Japan.

Technique Versus Exposure

Kiriyama rarely appears on variety shows and doesn't seek free media exposure. He prefers to focus on studying scripts and on his work as a musician (he plays bass with professional skill). That distance from the celebrity system has earned him special respect among casting directors.

In 2022, he reconnected with the franchise that made him famous, this time from a recording booth. He voiced his former character in the animated series Fuuto PI. It was an exercise in technical nostalgia, in which he had to adapt his voice to an animated drawing while keeping the essence of what he did thirteen years earlier.

In 2024, he took part in the production of The Silent Service Season 1: The Battle of Tokyo Bay for a global streaming platform. Filming this military-themed series required specific training in naval protocols and strict scheduling discipline. The production had a budget of several million yen per episode and was shot under strict safety measures at port facilities.
