Shunya Shiraishi wasn't looking for fame when he entered the Junon Super Boy Contest in 2007. He placed second among thousands of hopefuls from all over Japan. That result earned him a contract with the Horipro agency, but it didn't bring him an immediate career.
He made his film debut in Gokusen: The Movie in 2009. It was a tiny role, nearly invisible among the sea of young faces that filled the screen. But that shoot taught him that Tokyo's industry quickly chews up those who don't have a Plan B.
In 2012, the contract arrived that changed everything.
Starring in Kamen Rider Wizard meant filming extreme action scenes for a full year. Shiraishi played Haruto Soma and had to learn fight choreography that bordered on acrobatics. The series was a hit with audiences, but it typecast him in the tokusatsu genre for far too long.
Because the superhero suit can sometimes become a plastic prison.
His move into romantic drama happened in 2016 with Good Morning Call. The production was designed for mass consumption on digital platforms and unexpectedly gained strength beyond Japan's borders. Playing Hisashi Uehara gave him international exposure, which he managed with considerable detachment.
And the phenomenon repeated itself with the second season, filmed in 2017.
During this period, he balanced lighter shoots with darker projects. In 2017, he took part in the live-action adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul, playing Nishiki Nishio. It was a deliberate choice to move away from the image of the perfect student that had followed him since his early days on national television.
Many actors settle into the role of the perpetual leading man. Shiraishi decided he preferred to stay behind the camera so he could control the story of his own career.
In 2021, he wrote and directed his own short film, titled Smile. It wasn't a famous actor's whim, since he personally handled the funding and coordinated the sound and camera crews. The work has a far more introspective and dry tone than his previous commercial projects.
But he didn't abandon acting entirely. In 2023, he appeared in the series Otonari ni Ginga and briefly returned to the franchise that made him famous in the film Kamen Rider Geats: 4 Aces and the Black Fox. He did it out of respect for the saga's fans, but without any intention of taking on long-term action roles again.
The Japanese industry often demands frantic productivity from its young talent. Shiraishi broke that pattern by spacing out his appearances starting in 2022 to focus on writing original screenplays. His per-episode salary for television productions remained stable despite turning down several leading roles in low-budget romantic comedies.
Filming Higanjima: Vampire Island in 2016 left a physical scar on his leg that is still visible.
