Natsuna Watanabe dropped her surname in 2009 to relaunch her career. Before that move, she was just another teenager trying to make a name for herself at casting calls in Tokyo. But that aesthetic decision coincided with the moment her look began to fit big-budget productions.
It was in 2011 that the mass audience truly recognized her. She played Kei Kishimoto in the live-action adaptation of Gantz. That role demanded a level of physical and emotional exposure that few actresses of her generation were willing to take on in front of the camera.
Box office response was strong.
Her work in action films was no accident. The Japanese industry was looking for new faces who weren't afraid of physical contact or complex choreography. And Natsuna fit the profile of a determined woman who broke the mold of the fragile heroine (a very common standard in the J-Drama of the time).
In 2012 came the challenge that tends to make or break any performer in Japan. The public broadcaster NHK selected her to star in Jun to Ai. It's an asadora, a daily morning drama that demands marathon shoots lasting months and months.
That experience was mentally exhausting.
Critics weren't always kind to the show's tone. But the sheer volume of work toughened her up for what came next. Rather than being typecast in white television dramas, she sought out darker or more eccentric projects. She took part in the 2017 version of Fullmetal Alchemist, playing officer Maria Ross.
Natsuna appeared in more than ten different projects between 2018 and 2020. Her ability to move between commercial films and variety shows kept her in the public conversation without any major external marketing campaigns.
In 2021, she announced her marriage to a businessman in the service industry. Her work pace changed naturally. For 2022, she focused on her personal life after the birth of her first daughter. And in 2024, she repeated the experience with the arrival of her second child.
The industry brought her back to television in 2021 with the series Gekikarado.
In this production, she explored the culinary comedy genre. She wasn't seeking praise from specialized critics but rather connecting with an audience that consumes fiction quickly and directly. Her social media profile passed 300,000 followers shortly after returning to public activity.
Her contract with her agency, Toyota Office, ended after more than a decade of professional collaboration.
